Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Donald R. Krawiec, DVM, MS, PhD (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This soft-cover book is one in a series of books on canine and feline diseases. It covers a wide range of specific problems relating to canine and feline gastroenterology in 10 chapters and two appendices.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the practitioner with an easy-to-follow, problem-oriented guide that will lead to accurate diagnosis and satisfactory treatment of everyday cases. These worthy objectives were met by the editors.
Audience: The authors state that this book will be "...a welcome addition to the library of all those involved in Small Animal Practice and may well revolutionize the way in which practitioners approach the diagnosis and treatment of cases which present with gastrointestinal disease." I'm not sure this book is revolutionary, but it is a good practice-oriented text.
Features: As all of the BSAVA Manuals (British Small Animal Veterinary Association) in this series, this book is superbly illustrated with clear photographs line drawings and tables. The book has an introductory chapter on the diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease followed by a chapter on gastrointestinal endoscopy. Subsequent chapters cover the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, pancreas, and liver. The final chapter covers the surgical management of selected gastrointestinal disorders. This is a standard but effective organizational approach used by many gastrointestinal textbooks. The book is appealing to look at. The references are adequate and current.
Assessment: This is an up-to-date review of the material presented, and I recommend it to practitioners and students.
