From The CriticsReviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: I was fooled by the title of this book. This is not a drug reference, this is a comprehensive textbook about I.V. therapy. From history to antineoplastic therapy, there are 814 pages of I.V. related information. Previous editions were released in 1993 and 1997.
Purpose: "I hope this new edition provides you . . . with valuable insight into the safe practice of infusion therapy and a reference for this rapidly advancing field," the author states, pointing out that because of time constraints information about I.V. therapeutics is limited in basic nursing education. I agree, and this book will bridge that gap.
Audience: The author says "this manual can be used by the student, novice, or advanced practitioner in any setting where infusion-related skills are necessary." Much of this book will be useful for all nurses in acute care settings, some sections are very advanced and specialized. The author and the 12 contributors have excellent credentials and experience.
Features: "This self-paced, comprehensive text is presented in a modular-experiential format . . . (it) provides a test from which instruction builds from simple to complex, incorporating theory into clinical application." This book is comprehensive and there are no omissions. Black-and-white illustrations are adequate. Standards of care, critical thinking exercises, web sites, patient education, home and cultural considerations are included. Icons are used to point out specific content. A pre and post-test and a CD-ROM with 300 questions are included.
Assessment: This book is excellent and comprehensive, almost more about I.V. intervention than I ever want to know! This would be most useful as a text in a critical care nurse practitioner program, in libraries for reference, and in clinical areas with I.V. therapies as the specialty, such as chemotherapy or nutritional support. This updated edition is warranted due to rapidly changing modalities.
