Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: B. Peter E. Sawaya, MD(University of Kentucky College of Medicine)Description: This is the fifth edition of a popular manual on various fluids, electrolytes, acid-base, and renal diseases.
Purpose: The intent is to provide the reader with a practical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic renal diseases. These objectives are worthy given the need for a quick, practical, and readily portable reference book in the field of nephrology. By and large, the editor and contributors meet their objectives in providing a practical and focused approach to the diagnosis and management of common nephrological diseases.
Audience: This book is geared mainly to primary care physicians, medical students, house officers, and renal fellows. The editors have selected a superb cadre of contributors from nine different academic centers.
Features: The approach to patients with various nephrological abnormalities is covered succinctly in this book. As in prior editions, the strength of the book is easy readability and a focused and practical approach to the problem. Fluids, electrolytes, acid-base disturbances, and acute renal failure are particularly well covered. The editor uses easy-to-follow illustrations and simplified tables. A unique feature is the book size, which makes it easy to carry around. Also, the traditional spiral format is practical and user-friendly. In my opinion, a shortcoming is the meager coverage of the glomerular diseases and the kidney in systemic diseases. More detailed coverage of these topics would have enhanced the scope of this book. In fact, I feel these topics would have been more important to cover than the numerous radiographic films illustrated in Chapter 15.
Assessment: As usual, this book remains a traditional quick reference for primary care physicians and in particular house officers and renal fellows. It is extremely helpful for the busy intern/resident on call facing a patient with a nephrological problem. The new edition is an update of some of the information, and new contributors have been added. Fluids, electrolytes, and acid-base disorders are particularly well covered. I highly recommend this book to all hospital libraries.
