Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"The book covers most areas of orthopedics, including physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment. It is understandably more thorough with regard to trauma. It is comfortable to hold and one can quickly page through the outline style. The nine appendixes are very useful as quick references for musculoskeletal examination and evaluation. This will be useful as a quick reference to its intended audience."

Description: This is an accessible guide that allows readers to quickly learn how to diagnose and treat common musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. It is in a user-friendly outline format.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive, succinct tool that attempts to generally cover nearly all areas of orthopedic surgery. This is a worthy, but extremely difficult objective due to the wide-ranging scope and complexity of orthopedic surgery. The book is successful in a superficial way.
Audience: It is written for medical students, residents, emergency medicine physicians, urgent care providers, and primary care providers. The editors are credible authorities; Dr. Swiontkowski is particularly well regarded in the field of trauma.
Features: The book covers most areas of orthopedics, including physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment. It is understandably more thorough with regard to trauma. It is comfortable to hold and one can quickly page through the outline style. The nine appendixes are very useful as quick references for musculoskeletal examination and evaluation. The book falls short of its claim that "all chapters have been updated with fresh reviews of the literature." For example, the most recent reference for the hand and wrist injury chapter is dated 2000.
Assessment: This will be useful as a quick reference to its intended audience. However, this seventh edition is not that significantly different than the sixth edition, which was published in 2006. The most recent reference in the nonacute elbow, wrist, and hand chapter is 2002.
