The pharmacology, overdoses, and poisonings section from Irwin and Rippe's Manual of Intensive Care Medicine, Fourth Edition, has now been expanded into a complete, stand-alone SpiralĀ® Manual. This new Manual of Overdoses and Poisonings is a practical quick-reference bedside guide to the evaluation and treatment of toxic or potentially toxic drug and chemical exposures.

The first chapter presents a general approach to differential diagnosis, diagnosis, and treatment of poisoning. Subsequent chapters focus on specific drugs, chemicals, and toxidromes and provide details on clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Chapters are formatted to allow quick access to essential information and include annotated references.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Amy C. Knutsen, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is the first edition of a reference on clinical management of toxins and chemical exposures related to the fifth edition of Irwin and Rippe's Intensive Care Medicine (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2003).
Purpose: The purpose is to identify commonly encountered exposures that are potentially life-threatening and outline the presentation and patient management.
Audience: Students, residents, fellows, and practitioners who evaluate and treat patients with toxic exposures will benefit from this presentation. The editorial panel represents leaders in critical care medicine with input from local toxicology experts.
Features: An alphabetical listing of medications which cause overdose syndromes along with an index comprises this softbound pocketbook of approximately 200 pages. The majority of the book is devoted to an alphabetical presentation of drug classes within which individual drugs are discussed. Each section contains background information, pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of overdose. Specific references for related up-to-date literature are provided, where appropriate. After presentation of individual drugs, a number of special topics are discussed, including complications of the specific overdose and of treatment, appropriate disposition of the patient, and prevention of re-exposure. Tables in each chapter display drugs and antidotes in chart form and histograms display pharmacokinetics, where appropriate.
Assessment: This pocket-sized, well-organized bedside tool is useful for students and practitioners in settings from the first responders to intensive care units. Extensive indexing allows a variety of means to access the information and compare various toxins. The overall organization also provides easy and quick access to information.
