Reviewer: Catherine Ruth Bachman, M.D. FRCPC(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This book, which is well described by its title, addresses concisely the broad subject of perioperative anesthesia care for children. The book was first published in 1979, and the previous edition appeared in 1995.
Purpose: In the words of the authors, this book "is written and designed to provide a concise but comprehensive pocketbook guide to pediatric anesthesia practice....(and) as a study guide for trainees in pediatric anesthesia." These objectives are worthwhile and the previous editions have been staples for practitioners and students alike. This edition is an excellent update.
Audience: It is stated that this book is written for any anesthesiologists involved in pediatric anesthesia, both practitioners and trainees. Information on each subject covers the basics, suitable for the trainee, but involves a discussion of sufficient depth that is useful to one more knowledgeable in the field. The authors are both extensively published, well known, and highly regarded in the field of pediatric anesthesia.
Features: The book is divided into two main sections. The first, "Foundation of Pediatric Anesthesia," includes pediatric anatomy and physiology with a particular emphasis on what is relevant to anesthesia, pharmacology, and a clear chapter on regional techniques for children. The discussions of pediatric medical conditions influencing anesthesia management are pertinent and useful. Pain management in children is thorough for a handbook, including assessment tools and multiple options for management. The second main section, "Anesthesia for Specific Procedures," is organized by specialty. Each chapter is organized clearly, beginning with a concise discussion of general principles, followed by well-referenced and up-to-date discussions of most of the conditions and surgeries seen in that specialty. The appendixes are useful, concise, and user-friendly with anesthesia implications of syndromes, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and drug doses.
Assessment: This manual has evolved from the first edition, which described one institution's approach to pediatric anesthesia, to a concise and thorough presentation of the physiology, pharmacology, and relevant issues of children and anesthesia in a more inclusive fashion. This is an excellent handbook for practitioners and trainees alike.
