Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: William J. Greeley, MD (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia)
Description: This book is a practical, simple guide of pediatric critical care medicine. A comprehensive overview of important issues and techniques in managing critically ill children is provided.
Purpose: The purpose is to briefly describe theory and underlying principles of practice and to suggest a simple, straightforward management approach. Much of the information provided is detailed elsewhere in other comprehensive manuals of pediatric critical care medicine. This text meets the objectives as a general overview of the topic, issues, and some of the techniques.
Audience: This simple, straightforward book is intended for students, nurses, and beginning physicians with an interest in pediatric critical care medicine. The authors and contributors, with some exception, represent a certain geographic area and institutional approach, where more authoritative and diverse approaches would be desirable.
Features: The book includes numerous charts, tables, and graphs that illustrate various techniques. The references are limited in scope and quality. A pediatric formulary and standard reference tables are provided.
Assessment: This book is useful as a simple introductory text for beginners in pediatric critical care medicine. The book is really an overview text; most of the discussion regarding pathophysiology and management are superficial and limited. Some topics do not include current management approaches. The graphs and techniques are straightforward. There are better authoritative texts dealing with topics and issues in pediatric critical care medicine as well as practical approaches elsewhere that serve those practitioners of pediatric critical care medicine. The book represents an effort to fill an introductory need for the beginning practitioner in this area by presenting a simple overview.
