Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Ralph J. Damiano, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a manual that describes current practices for perioperative care in adult cardiac surgery. The previous edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: This purpose is to help readers give better care to their patients, a worthy objective. The author meets his objective by providing concise information that is up-to-date and helpful in caring for adult cardiac surgery patients.
Audience: This book is written for practitioners who care for adult cardiac surgery patients. The material is suitable for that audience, and the author is a credible authority.
Features: This book covers the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care given to adult cardiac surgery patients. The author does a nice job of covering the details associated with cardiac surgery, including diagnostics, anesthesia, and even the details of the procedure. These detailed descriptions are valuable for a nonsurgeon practitioner involved in the care of these patients. The appendixes are helpful to practitioners (including surgical residents) who are involved in the day-to-day care of these patients including notes, placement of drains, typical order sets, and protocols such as heparinization or hyperglycemia control.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that is particularly helpful for nonsurgeon practitioners or surgical residents who care for adult cardiac surgery patients. Specific questions can be answered quickly and are dealt with concisely so that a practitioner can find out quickly and easily answers to the many dilemmas presented in this challenging population of patients. The strength of this book lies in its comprehensive coverage of the many peripheral details of the adult cardiac surgery patient in all phases (preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative) of care. The author addresses the many evolving changes in cardiac surgery and the updates make this new edition valuable.
