This is a (large) pocket-sized manual that deals with perioperative care of adult and pediatric cardiac and thoracic surgical patients. It incorporates an outline format substantially augmented by narrative description. This is a manual to help caregivers optimize surgical care. It is a good deal more extensive than other perioperative care manuals, and approaches the varied subjects in a ""how to do it"" method. The audience is junior and senior house staff, cardiothoracic trainees, physician's assistants, and junior practicing surgeons. The author is a credible authority on the subject matter, and the manual meets or exceeds most expectations. This is the second edition. The first was well received, and the present edition has been extensively rewritten and augmented. Operative procedures are illustrated in nice line drawings. There are good, definitive, and recent references. The index is quite satisfactory. The manual is done in a paperback fashion. There are a number of excellent tables, and the reader can quickly have a clear idea as to differential diagnosis, and treatment options. This is an extensive manual with emphasis on technique, tactics, and diagnosis in a perioperative care setting. The outline format is augmented by plenty of narrative. Especially good features include information on drugs, arrhythmias, low cardiac output syndrome (although measurement theory of cardiac output is not included), and techniques of common operations. This is clearly a how to do it manual, and goes further than most to direct the caregiver in the right direction.
