Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“In summary, this text would be a useful addition to any practice library and provides an easily accessible and clear reference guide to common soft tissue surgical procedures. The author is to be commended for the quality of the photography and concise step wise descriptions. As a text, it would complement books such as the BSAVA manuals, and for recent graduates with an interest in surgery, it provides an excellent reference text to guide them as they gain surgical experience.” (JSAP, 2012)

"Overall, I believe that this book is an excellent resource that would be most useful for veterinary students and new graduates as well as a refresher guide for experienced practitioners. It would be a valuable addition to the library of any general practitioner, and it is a must for general practitioners with an interest in surgery." (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, June 2010)

"This manual will provide a valuable addition to the practice library, and may well frequently end up propped open in the operating theatre. The main audience will be veterinary students and newly qualified vets, but more experienced practitioners will also find something useful in descriptions of procedures with which they are already familiar." (Veterinary Record, February 2010)

"The purpose is to provide step-by-step instructions for procedures while avoiding much of the extraneous detail found in many surgical textbooks. This book provides a much needed focus on soft tissue surgery procedures likely to be encountered and performed in a general practitioner setting. Veterinary students and veterinarians will find this to be an essential, easy to read reference for these procedures." (Doody's, February 2010)

Reviewer: Kevin K Au, BSc BVMS(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This manual aims to provide logical step-by-step descriptions of common soft tissue surgery procedures in small animals.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide step-by-step instructions for procedures while avoiding much of the extraneous detail found in many surgical textbooks. Surgical textbooks are known for their scientific and well referenced content, which can make it difficult to extract more practical information. This manual succeeds in its aim in an easy to read, well illustrated fashion.
Audience: Targeted primarily at senior veterinary students and small animal general practitioners, this book lists the most common soft tissue surgical procedures performed in a general practice setting. More complex and specialist soft tissue procedures such as thoracic procedures and hepatobiliary surgery are not covered. The author is a recognized leading authority in the field of soft tissue surgery with an extensive list of publications.
Features: Each chapter covers a specific surgical procedure with step-by-step descriptions of the technique along with clear photographs and illustrations of each stage. Both simple procedures, such as canine castration, and more advanced procedures, such as perineal urethrostomy, are covered. The presentation is unique, with frequent reference to tips and tricks as if the author were conversing directly with the reader. Of particular benefit are the descriptions of procedures such as tie over bandages and placement of gastrostomy, cystostomy, and esophagostomy tubes. These procedures are frequently discussed but sometimes poorly described. This book provides exact descriptions and step-by-step photographs of the techniques, allowing readers to confidently apply them in practice. Readers looking for detailed information on pathophysiology and surgical theory are better served by other textbooks. Although some readers may consider this a shortcoming, this is not the aim of this book.
Assessment: This book provides a much needed focus on soft tissue surgery procedures likely to be encountered and performed in a general practitioner setting. Veterinary students and veterinarians will find this to be an essential, easy to read reference for these procedures.
