Or else it was, 'what does Dirr say?' For years I would check in Dirr's book that was in the office and I would always want one. Now that it is required for my horticulture class I am VERY happy to own my own Dirr for reference. Highly detailed information helps me visualize the plant part being described and culture/propagation/landscape value information is great. Be careful, he has a sense of humor. If you are not accustomed to laughing whilst referencing plants, you will enter a new experience. The only thing missing are color plates, but then . . . I wouldn't be able to pick Dirr up. I truly understand why finding a used copy was difficult. No one wants to give theirs up!

I originally bought this book as a horticulture student but it is a must have for any serious gardener. It is my 'go-to' book when I have any question regarding my plants.

This book is a life saver! I am a horticulture/landscape student and this book tells you everything you need to know about woody plants. This is one of those books that you don't sell back, you keep it forever.

Dirr, has written a great book and this should be on the shelf of any serious or non-serious landscapers. This book also has a series of CD's that can also be ordered or bought that gives you colored pictures but no information on all the plants in the book.

I originally purchased this manual as a required college textbook. Plant listing are arranged by botanical name(genus species), along with major cultivars/varieties, origin, propagation methods, and all other information needed for identification and use of Woody Ornamentals. The only thing missing, that you might need, are color pictures. I recommend purchasing one of Dirr's Illustrated Encyclopedias as a visual companion to this manual. Which one you need will depend on what area of the country you live in. Overall, this manual is a "gotta have" for anyone serious about landscaping or horticulture. It has earned itself a prominent place in my reference library.

Purchased this manual for my previous one fell apart over the years. THis is an excellant manual for woody plant material. Considered the bible of plants by peers. Describes plants and their uses/ culture and propagation. A must for one to create a successful landscape. Average home owner might find this too comprehensive, but Landscape architects/ horticulturists/ etc... should fine this helpful when deciding upon which plant material should work for a given area/ situation.

This book is great tool to have on hand when planning a garden or just want to know what a plant is used for involving sunlight, soil, hardiness, and area. It has useful information for all the cultures it has upon the certain plant and its differences in distinguishing one from another. This book is great for students that are taking agricultural classes to learn more about a certain plant and to gain knowledge about all plants. All I can say that its a great book, a great tool and great to have on hand!

Not only is this book easy to read and understand, it provides a plethora of information about shrubs and trees. You can't find a more comprehensive book of this kind in the midwest. As a master gardener, this has helped me identify trees just by type of bark or a leaf sample. This book is a plus for any gardener's book shelf.

If you are a serious gardener this is a book for you. Have it in my reference library and love it. If you don't want to plant a variety of shrub next to your home that is going to be 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide then this book is a must. There is so much valuable information in this book!!!
