Manuel Blancafort: Piano Music, Vol. 3

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Patsy Morita
Like many of his fellow Iberian composers, Manuel Blancafort was influenced both by the styles of modern French composers and by the traditional music of his homeland. The first two suites on this disc, the third volume from Naxos of his piano music performed by Miquel Villalba, show an indebtedness particularly to Debussy. Both "Camins" and "Cants ?ntims II" consist of mostly quiet, moody, intimate atmospherics, created with simple lines of music.
Both "Camins" and "Cants íntims II" consist of mostly quiet, moody, intimate atmospherics, created with simple lines of music. Some are carefree, some are more pensive in tone, but all have a richness of translucent color. The harmony reveals them as Catalonian, more than the rhythms Blancafort used. The third suite here, "El parc d'atraccions," was Blancafort's most popular work. It again is very colorful, but there is more liveliness and a sense of character in each of its movements, depicting attractions at a fun fair, whereas much of the other suites are gentle and still, with only occasional flashes of brilliance. The "Pastoral" could almost be describing the feelings of a visitor at that same country fair. It begins with animated excitement and dancing rhythms, then becomes more serene before leisurely going back to the dancing in a peaceful manner. It has a little more flavor of the rhythms and ornaments associated with Spanish music than the other pieces. Villalba has an incredible consistency of tone and balance, making the most of the colors in Blancafort's music. The joyous outbursts in the third of the "Cants íntims" are fortissimo, but the notes still have a roundness to them, showing his perceptive handling of the proportions of the musical lines. The recording clearly picks up that sensitivity, even at its extremes, such as the low rumble at the opening of "Camí del solitari" and the faint echoes in the "Pastoral." "Villalba" truly presents Blancafort's work in its best light.
