Overview

A literary masterpiece by a Polish traveller, aristocratic adventurer, political activist, ethnographer and publisher

Alphonse, a young Walloon officer, is travelling to join his regiment in Madrid in 1739. But he soon finds himself mysteriously detained at a highway inn in the strange and varied company of thieves, brigands, cabbalists, noblemen, coquettes and gypsies, whose stories he records over sixty-six days. The resulting manuscript is discovered some forty years later in a sealed casket, from which tales of characters transformed through disguise, magic and illusion, of honour and cowardice, of hauntings and seductions, leap forth to create a vibrant polyphony of human voices. Jan Potocki (1761-1812) used a range of literary styles - gothic, picaresque, adventure, pastoral, erotica - in his novel of stories-within-stories, which, like the Decameron and Tales from the Thousand and One Nights, provides entertainment on an epic scale.

A fascinating book of stories. Unlike any other book I've read and told in a unique voice.

I had never heard of this book before, but I am glad I found it. Part fantasy, part mystery the story is based on a manuscript found in Spain in the mid-18th century dealing with ghosts, gypsies, mysterious cults and enlightenment mores. Potocki was a child of the enlightenment who was himself a contradiction of the times constructs a story that some people would have believed a true journal. It is the story of a gentleman told over 65 days that melds several stories into one narration. Intriguing and fun.

The Manuscript Found in Saragossa is particularly engrossing because of the many stories the reader becomes involves with. In Potocki's crowning work, he has integrated many different tales, each told by a different character in the frame story. This book follows the adventures of a young Walloon guard as he keeps being misguided by gypsies, ghosts, and two beautiful Morish sisters, all of which tell him the fascinating stories this book is composed of!
