Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This patchwork anthology of 13 new vampire stories proves that heavyweight contributors can give some substance to a relatively slight theme. Harris (the Sookie Stackhouse novels), Kelner (the Laura Fleming mysteries) and 11 other writers with serious vamp credentials craft stories around the concept of birthdays for bloodsuckers. Most of the tales only blow out candles in passing, as with P.N. Elrod's "Grave-Robbed," which mixes pathos and comedy as vampire PI Jack Fleming busts a phony medium mid-séance, and Tanya Huff's "Blood Wrapped," in which Henry Fitzroy's search for the ideal gift for a vampire's 40th mixes with his pursuit of a human kidnapper. Christopher Golden takes birthdays to heart in his poignant coming-of-age story, "The Mournful Cry of Owls," while Kelley Armstrong proposes in "Twilight" that a vampire's real birthday is the date of transformation from mortal to immortal. Fans of the many series vampires on parade here will be undeterred by the variable quality of their adventures. (Sept.)

Library Journal

In this anthology, 13 talented writers have found clever ways to intertwine two seemingly disparate themes, vampires and birthdays. Christopher Golden's "The Mournful Cry of Owls" tells of a mother who, on her daughter's birthday, must explain the strange truth of the girl's ancestry. In Kelley Armstrong's mesmerizing "Twilight," the rebirth date of the vampire Cassandra has arrived. Now she has one unpleasant task to perform. And in "Fire and Ice and Linguini for Two,"Tate Halloway writes a funny, romantic piece about the vampire Sebastian reluctantly celebrating his birthday, although he believes it cursed. Some stories are better than others, but all are entertaining and worth reading. This excellent collection will appeal to the growing legion of paranormal fans. Recommended for public libraries.

Meet the Author

Charlaine Harris writes the New York Times bestselling paranormal series featuring Sookie Stackhouse (the basis for the HBO series True Blood) and the New York Times bestselling mystery series featuring lightning-struck corpse locator Harper Connelly.

Toni L.P. Kelner is the award-winning author of the Laura Fleming Southern mystery series.

Biography

A native of the Mississippi Delta, Charlaine Harris grew up in a family of avid readers (her father was a teacher; her mother a librarian). She attended Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, graduating in 1973 with a degree in English and Communication Arts. Although she penned poetry and plays in school, her first serious foray into fiction was with two standalone novels, Sweet and Deadly and A Secret Rage, published (effortlessly!) in the early 1980s.

After her early success, Harris released the first installment in a series of lighthearted mysteries starring spunky, small-town Georgia librarian, true crime enthusiast, and amateur sleuth Aurora Teagarden. When Aurora debuted in Real Murders (1990), Publishers Weekly welcomed "a heroine as capable and potentially complex as P. D. James's Cordelia Gray." The book went on to receive an Agatha Award nomination.

Anxious for another challenge, Harris began a second series in 1996. Darker and edgier than the Teagarden novels, these mysteries featured taciturn, 30-something housecleaner Lily Bard, a woman with a complicated past who has moved to the small town of Shakespeare, Arkansas, to find peace and solitude. The first novel, Shakespeare's Landlord, was well-received. BookList raved: "Harris has created an intriguing new character in this solidly plotted story." [Much to the disappointment of her fans, Harris concluded the Lilly Bard sequence in 2001 with Shakespeare's Counselor.]

Although Harris achieved moderate success with these two series (which she laughingly describes as "cozies with teeth"), she would hit the jackpot in 2001 with Dead Until Dark, a sly, spoofy paranormal mystery starring a telepathic Louisiana cocktail waitress named Sookie Stackhouse, who falls in love with a vampire named Bill. The novel, a delightful hybrid of mystery, science fiction, and romance, was an instant hit with critics. ("Harris' Sookie has the potential to attract more readers than Hamilton's Anita Blake," raved the dark fantasy magazine Cemetery Dance.) Readers, too, adored the Southern Vampire Series and have rewarded the author with bestseller after bestseller. (In 2008, the Sookie saga came to HBO in a top-rated television adaptation, True Blood, starring Anna Paquin.)

With 2006's Grave Sight, Harris added yet another fascinating character to her stable -- a young woman named Harper Connelly whose youthful encounter with a lightning bolt has left her with the ability to find corpses and determine how they died. In addition to juggling characters and plots for her popular series, Harris has also contributed short stories and novellas to several anthologies of paranormal fantasy fiction.

Good To Know

In our interview, Harris confesses:

"I'm really a boring person. My family (my husband and three children) is the most important thing in my life. I go to bed early, I get up early. I love to go to the movies with my husband. My favorite things about finally making some money as a writer are (a) I can buy as many books as I want, and (b) I can hire a maid. The first job I had was working in an offset darkroom at a very small newspaper. I stood on a concrete floor all day and made minimum wage -- which then was $1.60 an hour. I hated it, and I learned a lot, though not necessarily about working in a darkroom. So being a writer is much better."

    Ok

I guess after targeting into one series of books based on a certain storyline I had a little trouble getting into this particular book. Not to say it was bad, but I guess when the mood hits me, I will again pick up this copulation of short stories. I've always been a picky reader. Some Authors book quickly catch my attention right away, and sometimes I guess like most people, others never do. YET there are those few suprising times when one ( book & Author )that didn't really appeal to me will catch my attention... I am holding onto the hope that I will find my way through this book.

Love the take on undead birthdays!

My favorites were Dracula Night by Charlaine Harris which is a Sookie Stackhouse story, It's My Birthday, Too by Jim Butcher which has a story about Harry Dresden (liked the tv series hadn't read his work before), The Wish by Carolyn Haines as it has to do with death and when is it your time to die. The stories in this book go from romantic aspects to humor and back again in no time at all - if you like vampires or the undead in general you should like this book.

its a collection of shorter stories

I bought ths collection because of Ms Harris's name being on the cover (I'm a big fan of the Sookie stories) and this grouping contains a tale of Sookie's - I had also hoped to find a new author to read by perusing their short stories - and I'm not saying I did not - but as I write this and the book is in another room no authors name jumps up in memory - there are very good stories in the book but nothing jumps out in my mind as "I have to buy more of this writer" even Ms Harris's offering is a reprint because halfway through the first page I was recalling the story.

Mind now I read because I like an author's style of writing and the general topics they follow
I'd recommend this a great going to bed book the stories are all reasonably brief and unless you are an insomniac its not too difficult to put down after finishing one story - but you will want to pick it up the next night to see the next offering

    I Also Recommend:

Many Bloody Returns, Tales of Birthdays With Bite

The idea of vampires celebrating their birthdays is an entertaining one. "Dracula Night" was a bit of a spoiler for me. I've only read the first two Sookie Stackhouse books. Compared to the other two stories in this anthology, it wasn't that great.
"It's My Birthday, Too" delivers! It has everything a Dresden fan wants and expects! "Blood Wrapped" was good too. It was great to re-visit the world of Tony and Henry, as they rescue a child and try to figure out what to give Vicki for her birthday.

    A Fun Read

This was a fun collection of stories to read by a nice variety of authors. Some of whom I had heard of and others who were new to me. More and more I find myself picking up these collections because it seems to be the best way to find new series to read.

    Death and Birthdays!

How ironic! This book was put together quite well! The concept of combining death and birthdays, I have to say, is very original.

Charlaine Harris' Dracula Night was a scream. I love it when a story can makes me laugh out loud.

    Very Disapointing

Some of the stories were okay, but not enough to carry the book. I think this we be the last time a buy a book that is a collection of stories.

    Fantastic anthology

These thirteen new vampire tales focus on the theme of birthdays (and many happy returns). Although the theme is incredibly narrow and restrictive, the contributors provide fresh interesting tales with no losers and star some of the more famous series characters this the collection serves as a great introduction (albeit limited) to heroes of the supernatural. The most innovative entry is 'Twilight¿ by Kelley Armstrong in which she insists a vampire¿s birthday is the day they convert as that is a rebirthing. The rest of the stories make for a fun compilation with the lively authors being superstars in the undead realm such as Jim Butcher (with Harry), P.N. Elrod (with Fleming), and Charlaine Harris (with Sookie), etc. Still singing happy birthday thirteen times even too many series favorites can become a bit long in the tooth and difficult to blow out the zillion candles for some of the recipients this reviewer suggests leisurely enjoying the anthology over a few weeks.----------------- Harriet Klausner
