Children's Literature
This "Many Cultures, One World" series takes readers on a journey to the country of Spain. In the annual August event, La Tomatina, people throw tomatoes at one another and then parades, fireworks and music follow during the week-long celebration. Spain has a population of about 40 million people and the nation covers almost 195,000 square miles. It is in Western Europe, next to Portugal and France. Some people live in small country towns, while most live in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona. Family life is very important to the Spanish people. Children, parents, and grandparents often live together, while aunts, uncles and cousins nearby. They often eat their main meal together at 2 P.M. and their last meal at about 10 P.M. Most people in Spain are Catholic and celebrate Holy Week, the week before Easter. Most children do not own pets and bullfighting is a popular sport. The book has a glossary, index, bibliography, and activities for readers, which can further their knowledge and experience of the culture. 2004, Blue Earth Books/Capstone Press, Ages 8 to 11.
