Overview

In Sugar Grove, New Hampshire, people are serious about their maple syrup—especially Dani Greene, whose family owns the Greener Pastures sugarhouse.  But when murder disrupts the small-town sweetness, Dani pores over clues to draw out a killer...

Despite being a fourth-generation syrup maker, Dani isn’t stuck in the past. She’s starting a new agricultural cooperative that reduces costs for every syrup producer who joins. Everyone considers it a sweet deal except the die-hard curmudgeon Frank Lemieux—and when a saboteur starts targeting supporters, everyone suspects Frank.

But it turns out they’re barking up the wrong tree when Dani finds Frank murdered in his own sugarhouse. As the sabotage continues, she realizes that Frank was framed. With the help of her family, and a handsome official from the Fish and Game Department, Dani must catch the killer before another syrup maker kicks the bucket.

Meet the Author

As a nearly lifelong resident of the Granite State, Jessie Crockett naturally adores black flies, 98 percent humidity, killing frosts in August, and snowbanks taller than the average grandmother. When not working on her next murderous adventure, she enthusiastically putters in her greenhouse, designs bento lunches, and throws parties. She delights in mentoring young writers at a local elementary school. Jessie lives with her husband and children in a village so small, many other New Hampshire residents have never heard of it.

Sap Runs Slow at the Start Dani Greene has come up with a great idea to help all the maple growers in her small town of Sugar Grove, New Hampshire.  She is going to start a cooperative so that all the growers can benefit from the bulk rate discounts.  Almost everyone is on board with the idea, the lone holdout being Frank Lemieux.  In fact, he is so against it, he uses his dog to drive Dani off his property when she visits him a second time.   So naturally when someone starts sabotaging those who plan to join the co-op, Frank is the prime suspect.  When a dead body ups the stakes, Dani jumps in to figure out what is happening.  Is the murder connected to the sabotage?   Having enjoyed the first book a couple of months ago, I couldn’t wait to dig in to this one.  Unfortunately, it gets off to a slow start.  While there is sabotage happening from the beginning, the first half spends more time on Dani’s love life than I really wanted.  However, things get better in the second half, and I couldn’t put it down until I reached the end.  Dani is a delightful character, so I enjoyed spending time with her period, and the rest of the cast added some great humor.   Despite the slow start, this book was definitely worth reading.  Now I have to wait until the third in the series comes out next year for my next sweet mystery with Dani.   NOTE: I received this book in an on line contest.  No review was promised in exchange for the book.

Dollycas’s Thoughts Things are getting very sticky in Sugar Grove and that makes for a fantastic cozy mystery. Dani is right in the middle of another murder of investigation and the local sheriff is away on a cruise with Dani’s mother. He left Mitch Reynolds in charge. Mitch and Dani dated a few times and she does everything to avoid him. When her fabulous car, that she just got back from the mechanic, is vandalized he tries to ticket her for having broken headlights and taillights instead of being concerned about who wrecked her car. He is definitely in over his head when Dani finds Frank’s body. Of course, she becomes his prime suspect. Jessie Crockett has created some truly wonderful characters, ones we love like Dani, her grampa, Piper, the owner of The Stack Shack and Dani’s best friend, Graham, the handsome Fish and Game Warden and Celedon, Dani’s sister who is doing anything she can to get Dani settled down and married. And those we don’t love so much like Knowlton and Mitch. I wanted to jump in the pages at more syrup over Mitch’s head more than once. The mystery is top-notch and the dialogue is so well written. The perfect amount of humor and romance is blooming for more than just Dani. Her phone calls from her mother just cracked me up. I also enjoy learning all about making syrup and tapping the trees. This is a fun and entertaining story for those of us who like our whodunits on the cozy side.

Although this is the 2nd book of this series, it is the 1st book I have read by Jessie Crockett. Dani Greene's family has been in the maple syrup business for 4 generations. Dani believes that a cooperative of all the local sugar houses would be a great benefit to everyone. As Dani makes her rounds everyone seems eager to join in, everyone except Frank Lemieux that is. But then again everyone expected Frank to veto the idea. What wasn't expected was Frank's death, in his own sugar house. As Dani looks into his death, she realizes that Frank was being framed for all the hi-jinx that had been occurring. Enter Dani's family and the sexy Fish and Game Warden Graham, who all pitch in to solve the murder and to stop all the underhanded events.  FTC Full Disclosure - A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.
