    Best book ever!!!!!

I am in 9th grade and an avid reader. I have read many books but this is definitely one of the best. It is very simply written and easy to understand, but the plot is exciting, the writing is vivid, and provides a movie-like experience. It has romance, adventure, and suspense. You feel like you are standing there with the characters. There are inward struggles, and outward battles. There is drama, but not so much that it is inappropriate for younger readers. Definitely a must read.

    MARA--WORST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am in sixth grade and my class is reading it. Everyone wants to murder Eloise Jarvis McGraw. This is the worst book ever and I definitely don't recommend reading it. I've fallen asleep while reading it, and one time in class we were reading it silently to ourselves and I got so bored I did nothing while I pretended to read. Do not read this book.

I found this story to be most enjoyable! A friend lent it to me

I found this story to be most enjoyable! A friend lent it to me and, months later, when I decided to read it as a way to put myself to sleep, I ended up staying up until 2 in the morning reading it! It's easy to follow, entertaining, and just a good, adventurous, romantic tale. The characters, particularly Sheftu, are wonderfully difficult to predict. It's made me more interested in the history of ancient Egypt. I'd recommend it to anyone!

A classic romance in romantic Egypt

I read this book when I was 15 and thought it was the most romantic book ever. Sheftu is a great hero and Mara is a stirring heroine. She risks everything for love and freedom. Can't ask for more than that. The fact that I am now 60 years old and vividly remember this book should say a lot. The publish date must mean the republish date because it is a lot older than that.

    Best book!

"Mara" is one of the best books I've ever read! I've always been a sucker for adventure-romance, and this DEFINITELY hits the mark. Definitely a page turner, with vivid, alive descriptions and deep characters. Great book, must read!

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Tween/Teen Adventure-Romance

I found an old hardcover copy of "Mara" in the local library as a teenager. I've always been interested in ancient Egypt, so I sat down to read it right away. This is a terrific romance/adventure, featuring a feisty heroine and noble, honorable hero. Mara and Sheftu are a great couple, and the supporting characters are equally interesting. My only complaint is that McGraw made Hatshepsut into the villain (she was actually a very good Pharaoh). Still, highly recommended to fans of "The Scarlet Pimpernal," "Zorro" and other classic adventures -- but who are looking for a strong female protagonist.

    I Also Recommend:

A BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN NOVEL OF ANCIENT EGYPT

I love Egyptology, and Archaeology and this is one of my favorite books I read about the time of my heightened interests in them. It is beautifully written, a novel that touches the soul`s need for adventure. In this book you are taken on a wonderful journey to Ancient Egypt in the days of an undecided future where the fate of a kingdom is unbalanced between Queen Hatshepset and her stepson Thutmose III. In a fiction tale we are introduced to the stubborn, fiery Mara, a slave fighting for freedom, and in her story we are taken into the lives of Ancient Egyptians, and the mysterious workings of a dangerous court. Fun, thrilling, and imaginative, Mara: Daughter of the Nile is a must read.

    This book is bad. BAD

If you're a fan of plot developement over a 200 page novel, likeable characters, hidden themes, and historical accuracies, then this book is NOT for you. On the other hand, if you want help going to sleep at night, you should throw out the sleeping pills and buy this book. I've read some bad ones in my time, but this one is far more boring than any I have had to endure over my entire life. The most interesting character, Sanq When, is introduced in a 2 sentence period and then left for the rest of the novel. I enjoyed not one, but 2 full sentenses of this class F book. McGraw belongs in a metal asylum along with Mara and her low grade character friends. I had to recouperate over a 4 year period with constant encouragement from teachers that I would never hear the word "Mara" ever again, but now that I have regained the sight in my left eye, I can spread the word that "Mara, Daughter of the Nile" is indeed the worst book ever writen. Don't make the mistake I did by reading this. Even if your teachers make you read it, claim it is against your ethics to read a book that has been proven to cause terminal illness and feelings of murder. Do NOT read this book. It's BAD.

I have some problems with this book

It is about as boring as it gets. I am a big fan of a good book, but this misses the mark. The plot developement is vast, but leads to more questions than answers. The story is absurd and although surrounded with realism, is very unbelievable. It's not quite the worst book ever made, but it certainly isn't good. It, to this day, is the only book I have read in my English class that I didn't like. Perhaps my generation can't appreciate the "hidden joys" of this book, but they're pretty hard to find.

    Eternally Wonderful

I read this book as a kid, 40 years ago, and it still stays with me today. I've had a lifelong interest in egyptology and archaeology, and this book probably helped fuel it. As an adult it is interesting to me to look back and see how she wove history so well with the fiction narrative. As for the kids who have reviewed this book and not liked it, well, it just reminds us that not everyone likes the same books. But the former kid in me wants to say 'GREAT BOOK!'

That person is crazy! I loved this book so much! trust me i've read boring books and this is not boring! It gets slow some times but is really sweet. And in the end you are out of your seat you are so into it. GREAT ROMANCE! as long as your not that super physical disgusting type. I LOVED IT! Outstanding job. Two thumbs up for Eloise Jarvis Mcgraw.

    The Ultimate Story

This story not only has clever and original characters, but it is very well written and has a thrilling plot. The end has an ironic twist that will have you biting your fingernails. It has been my favorite book for about five years, and I have yet to read its match. If you like history, romance, conspiracies, irony, and witty characters you'll love this book. Mara is a hilarious, real character that I'm sure you'll fall in love with just as I have.

    ...

Though slow at first, the book speeds up and sends you plunging head on into adventure and romance in the heart of ancient Egypt. I first read this book when I was in fifth grade, and even now, years later, I enjoy going back to read it. The vivid placement, and the characters feelings bring this book alive, and engages you. Another on my shelf.

Very Authentic. You could read this book for hours! It has the right amount of everything you would want in a book, action, romance, deceit. It couldn't get any better! You really see the characters change throughout the story. Emotional highs and lows, and realizing who the characters truly are. I have read it countless times, and I discover something new about it every time, and each time I see the story line differently! A must read!
