This is a multi-book review of two volumes in the "Ultra Sports" series. Identical in format to the other five books in this series, Marathon Cycling begins with an introduction to the sport followed by six chapters on the sport's history, getting started, health and safety, gear, tips on what to expect when racing, and events and competitions. The chapters are short and concise, making this book a good starting point for those who want to become involved in the sport. Color photos are plentiful, and the contact information and further reading sections will lead interested readers toward other sources, including Web sites. The writing is somewhat dry and lacking in enthusiasm, a definite point to consider because the books are written to pique interest. The glossary and index are adequate, although the glossary has a few strange entries such as "road bike: a bike to be ridden on efficiently paved roads." The Ironman Triathlon focuses more on proper training methods and nutrition despite the fact that the six chapters are arranged like those in the cycling book. This title has more contact information including international organizations and a daily training chart. As in Marathon Cycling, the writing is dry but informative for those who know little about the sport. These titles can be recommended for school or public libraries where interest in these sports is high. Teens who enjoy books on extreme sports such as snowboarding might find them appealing. Gr 5-8-This series is aimed at sports fanatics-those who have taken their obsession to the next level. As stated in the introduction of Marathon Running, you know what ultra means, "if you've ever pushed yourself to the limit-gone faster, farther, longer, or harder than you ever thought possible-." Readers will not find the basics of cycling or running in here, but they will find the history of ultra running and cycling, the required equipment, health and safety tips (such as what to do if you start hallucinating in the middle of a ride), and ultra competitions.
