All Music Guide - Vik Iyengar
Marc Cohn is one of the finest debut albums of the 1990s, and it brought adult piano pop back to the radio. Every song is well-crafted, and Cohn's singalong choruses, introspective lyrics, and vocal stylings reveal his '60s soul and '70s singer/songwriter influences. His voice is rich, but has a roughness that adds emotion when stretching to the upper end of his range while remaining subtle at the lower end. Marc Cohn shows himself to be an accomplished and versatile songwriter, from the uplifting gospel opener "Walking in Memphis," the hit for which he is widely known, to the concluding love letter "True Companion." Cohn has a great ear for melody and a keen eye for detail...

Cohn has a great ear for melody and a keen eye for detail that immediately grab your attention and reward the listener with repeated plays. The album's highlight, "Silver Thunderbird," is a prime example of Cohn's ability to combine storytelling with an unbelievably catchy chorus. It is not surprising that the songs played on piano work better than those written for guitar; however, the album is surprisingly consistent, even for a debut. This album is worth checking out for any listener who wonders where the tuneful pop and soul of the Big Chill era went.

    Changed My Life

I'm sure my headline sounds a little over the top, but it's the God's honest truth. As a singer/songwriter myself, this album helped shape and inspire my own music. The production and instrumentation is flawless. John Levanthal seems to completely understand where to take every song. It's the perfect match between artist and producer. And speaking of the songs, they are, in a word, magnificent. For a debut album in this genre, Marc Cohn came into the studio with a remarkable batch of tunes for a first time artist. Some artists couldn't write three songs anywhere near the quality of Walking in Memphis, Silver Thunderbird, and True Companion over the coarse of an entire career, let alone on their debut. The track placement is pitch perfect, creating a contemplative space where the listener is never jolted, but eased from idea to idea and mood to mood. This album is truly a masterpiece in the singer/songwriter genre and deserves to sit next to Late for the Sky, Ron Sexsmith, and Bring the Family. BUY THIS ALBUM.

One of the best albums I've ever owned

I've probably listened to this one a hundred times, and no, that's not a petty exaggeration. In fact, the only song which I don't absolutely love is 29 Ways, only because it doesn't seem to fit the rest of the album. The songs are written exquisitely, the musical composition is fantastic, and overall, this album is something that should not be missed.

    Absolutely Amazing Music

I can't say enough about this CD, I have loved it for years. Recently, I got married and "True Companion" was our wedding song. His voice is mesmerizing and amazing. There aren't a lot of CD's out there where you truly love the entire song list, but this one of them.

    If you are in Love....

I'm completely in love and have been trading love songs and burning CD's with my new partner for six months. Cohn reminds me of Seger in his best ballads... "True Companion" is perhaps the greatest love song of all time... I challenge anyone to listen to it without being touched. It should be everyones' wedding song! What a pity that it isn't more widely known.

Marc Cohn : real, original music to stir all your emotions.

I was introduced to Marc Cohn's music by my father in 1991 when I was 9 years old. His sound always appealed to me & still does. I never get tired of listening to his albums as his voice sounds so fantastic, velvety even. The wide variety of his music, the little details in his songs, the way each song is different. I am very pleased to have discovered, through this website, there is a third album available. Thank you Marc for beautiful music.

    perfection

come on! does it get any better? Cohn is the master when it comes to a smoothly flowing melody that interacts perfectly with all other elements of the song. Not a waisted note on the album. And the soul he sings with is just ridiculous! Truly a must have album, though I find his other albums unable to match this effort.

    Walking In Memphis

I have looked for so long to look for this song on the net. But seing this album, I would purchase this album JUST for ''Walking In Memphis''. It's a beautiful song and regardless of how the other songs on the album may sound, it's worth EVERY penny just for this one song.

Not a big music fan--loved this album

Like a previous listener, I heard ''Walking in Memphis'' and had to have it. The other songs on this gorgeous album are also moving, and the lyrics quite clear. Marc is a talented folksinger whose only fault is that he has too few albums

Picked the album up in June, and been listening ever since!

On an impulse, from a distantly remembered ''Walking in Memphis, I picked up this CD. It turned out that I would grow to love it. The songs brought to mind a mixture of James Taylor, Paul Simon, and Emmie Lou Harris' country rememberances. My favorite songs on the album are ''Miles Away'' and ''Dig Down Deep.'' This record made a perfect companion to a hot bath, homework, or 5 oclock in the morning - you get your money's worth.
