Is North America the next stop?
“I have been keeping a wary eye on the growing soccer scene in America,” writes Dougie Brimson. “And while the Los Angeles Galaxy’s purchase of the great David Beckham is going to provide the game with a huge boost, I have a very real concern that he isn’t the only British import that is going to impact American soccer over the coming seasons.”
Hooligan-turned-acclaimed author Dougie Brimson is the UK’s most respected authority on soccer hooligan-ism. Now, in a book written specifically for an American audience, he tells the astonishing story of the rampant hooliganism among European soccer fans and how it could spread to the U.S. Written in the raw, in-your-face style that has won considerable acclaim in Europe—The Daily Mail (London) said Brimson had written “probably the best book ever on soccer violence”—March of the Hooligans is a powerfully intimate look at what hooliganism has become and where it is headed.

¿I have been keeping a wary eye on the growing soccer scene in America, and while the Los Angeles Galaxy¿s purchase of the great David Beckham is going to provide the game with a huge boost, I have a very real concern that he isn¿t the only British import that is going to impact American soccer over the coming seasons. ¿ Dougie Brimson is an acclaimed expert on soccer hooliganism, which is the fights and brawls between rival soccer fans in England and that has spread throughout Europe. Now, he has written a book expressing all of his own emotions, such as his energy and adrenaline, as well as other hooligans¿ emotions also. In March Of The Hooligans, Dougie Brimson tells about his stories of being a soccer hooligan, including all the fights, the hatred between the rival teams, the stories of the many casualties, and much more. He wrote this book specifically for an American audience, sharing crazy stories about hooliganism in England. This book has won several awards, and the Daily Mail (London) said Brimson had written ¿probably the best book ever on soccer violence.¿ I loved this book. After reading it, I would rate it 5 stars because it was a well-written and interesting book, with lots of action. I especially liked the afterward on hooliganism coming to the U.S. It was very interesting and it made a very good point that not only is soccer becoming more popular, but also more dangerous in the United States. Overall, I think March of The Hooligans was a very sophisticated look at hooliganism and where it is headed in the future.

After all the hype on the various blogs, I was eagerly awaiting this book and it didn't disappoint. I read it in one hit! The books premise of hooliganism taking hold on the MLS has been the source of much discussion ranging from 'about time someone said this' to 'how stupid, it'll never happen' but in reality, this book is much more of a warning of what could happen if we aren't careful and how it could be stopped. Brimson actually adopts the ideal approach to the subject matter by using his own experiences to explain how the individual becomes involved and what the appeal of soccer violence is for those who take part. He then extends this into an objective look at soccer culture in the US before using some very interesting and thought provoking reasoning to explain why he thinks hooliganism could soon rear its ugly head. Although not convinced about all of it, there were certainly a few 'I never thought of that' moments for me. If nothing else, this book will blow away any misconceptions you might have about soccer hooliganism being some kind of quaint English game but it's also a very good and well written read. More importantly, I hope someone has the foresight to send copies to everyone involved with the MLS adminsitration!
