Marco the Flamingo is curious about where the snowbirds come from. They tell him it is cold and miserable and basically where he lives is paradise. But that isn't enough for Marco. One day he heads North. Of course the implication is that he'll freeze and want to return to the warm South, but this beautifully illustrated book takes a twist. With more illustration than words, the readers/viewers of this book are drawn into the joy Marco finds in skiing and skating and enjoying the cold North. Not only does he not freeze, he sends a postcard not from the warm South to the cold North, but from the North to the South expressing his joy. While the whole book elicits a smile the final twist, which I won't divulge, even more so. A wonderful book.

Marco the flamingo anxiously awaits the return of the migrating snow birds. He is the only one! The other flamingoes are annoyed by the snow birds, but Marco is very curious about them. He asks birds from geese to ducks about what they left behind. They all tell him invariably that he does not want to know. Marco does some reading, then decides first thing in the morning to fly north. After a long flight, his tired, frozen wings give out and he lands in a huge pile of snow. Marco takes a look around in wonder. He loves the snow. Quirky illustrations show Marco thoroughly enjoying what the ducks and geese left behind. He makes snow angels, ice skates, snowboards, makes a snowman, ice fishes, and skis. Then, Marco writes home to tell his friends how much he loves the snow, and this is a great reminder that what one abhors another finds enchanting. Apparently, Marco is not the only tropical animal curious about winter. We find him sledding with an alligator while monkeys, elephants and a giraffe play in the background. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz

PreS-Gr 2–Marco the flamingo is a southern bird who is curious about the north. He anxiously awaits the arrival of the snowbirds—migrating ducks and geese—to ask them about their homes but they just tell him that he doesn’t want to know. But Marco does want to know, so he heads north to experience the cold for himself. As he soars farther and farther, the tropical background fades into snow and Marco magically acquires earmuffs, a brightly striped scarf with matching socks, jeans, and a parka. Although some of the humor (complaining about snowbirds, for example) is aimed at adults, children will enjoy the comical illustrations of the spindly legged flamingo snowboarding, ice skating, and skiing. Although the Spanish is grammatically correct, it doesn’t always match the reading level of the English. For instance, even for Spanish-speaking children, “regresaron” is much more difficult to pronounce than “they’re back.” A small picture at the end shows a melting snowman and Marco returning south. Pair this book with Janet Morgan Stoeke’s A Hat for Minerva Louise (Dutton, 1994) and David Shannon’s Duck on a Bike (Scholastic, 2002) for a rollicking storytime about oddball birds.–Rebecca Hickman, Sherman Library at NSU, Fort Lauderdale, FL
