School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 5-8-In these readable biographies, there is a noticeable attempt to be unbiased, especially in Ponce de Le-n, which acknowledges the injustices done to Native peoples. Attractive covers with a large portrait of each explorer invite readers in to a busy layout of many color illustrations and photos with captions, various typefaces, boldfaced headings, quotations in large type, maps, and sidebars. The format is somewhat reminiscent of a magazine and could be distracting to serious readers. Each book includes thoughtful questions for further discussion and a time line of world events. However, the lack of bibliographies and citations for quotes makes the scholarship of these titles questionable.-Kristina Aaronson, Henniker Community School, NH Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
