Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
This book is another in a series called "Stories of Great People." Brother and sister Digby and Hannah like to visit an antiques market, especially, Mr. Rummage's stall. Digby is always looking for something special, and he usually finds something old and of historical importance. Here, he finds Marco Polo's silk purse. The book is told mainly through dialogue between the children and Mr. Rummage, but there are also many interesting factual sidebars. One such sidebar tells the reader that Polo was one of the first Europeans to visit China and that his book about the trip, The Travels, is one of the most famous travel diaries ever written. Mr. Rummage tells the story of Polo's life and travels through dialogue, while the children ask questions that he answers. Digby and Hannah learn that Marco Polo was a world traveler and adventurer who returned home with many stories. His travels took him to a variety of fascinating places, including Constantinople d Peking, China. There is an array of information presented through colorful illustrations, lively dialogue, and sidebars. A "fact or fiction" page and a glossary are included. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
