Anthony Birley does an excellent job of putting the scattered and scant sources together to tell the story of Marcus Aurelius' life. The Emperor's youth and education are well presented. Some letters between Marcus and his tutor Marcus Cornelius Fronto are mentioned. This gives a very brief glimpse into he private life of Rome's best Emperor. Anthony Birley give a very good view and chronology of the Marcomannic Wars. The Agustan History and the Column of Marcus Aurelius are used to piece together the blurred view we have today of that terrible war. Many of the generals and mentioned by name (BTW there is no Maximus). Marcus Aurelius: A Biography is history that reads like a novel. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Rome, history or looking for a good read. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
