Singing was to be her salvation. One day at a music industry party, a musician slipped executive Tommy Lottola a demo tape of Carey. Bored, he played it on his way home in the limo. Mottola followed the tracks of Carey's slipper and by 1990, at the age of 21, she HAD achieved instant stardom. Overview

A Cinderella story starring the bestselling female musical artist of the millennium

Mariah Carey grew up in a broken home, poor and with no friends. Singing was her salvation. One day, at a music industry party, another musician slips executive Tommy Mottola a demo tape of Mariah. In the limo on his way home Mottola is bored, so he listens to the tape. Mariah's voice is like liquid gold. He goes back to look for her. But just like in the Cinderella story, she has slipped away.

Mottola follows the tracks of Carey's slipper and immediately signs her on. In 1990, at 21, she becomes an instant star. Her debut album sells more than seven million copies in the U.S. And she ends up marrying Mottola, her Prince Charming.

Marc Shapiro's new biography charts this Cinderella story in which Carey becomes the biggest selling recording artist of the 1990s, selling 115 million albums worldwide. Carey is the only musical artist to earn a #1 single every year of the last decade. At the beginning of this decade, fans are anticipating her new movie and soundtrack to All That Glitters (March 2001).

Shapiro's new book also includes coverage of Carey's personal life: her love of cats and dogs, riding horses and roller coasters, and watching Marilyn Monroe movies; her eventual break-up with Mottola, revealed to have physically abused Mariah and kept her prisoner in their mansion; and her recent bizarre behaviour at live shows like her fondness for the striptease.

Marc Shapiro's previous books include the best-selling J.K. Rowling: The Wizard Behind Harry Potter, Carlos Santana: Back on Top, My Rules: The Lauryn Hill Story, and James Cameron: An Unofficial Biography of the Filmmaker.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This unauthorized biography tells the story of young Mariah Carey's life from her tumultuous childhood to the diva she is today. It chronicles her rise to fame and covers all of her creative endeavors in detail. Although the biography ends before her more recent troubles with exhaustion, her record label, and her film debut in Glitter, it delves into the personal traumas that the singer has endured. The book includes several color and black-and-white photos as well as a discography, videography, and a list of awards. "What you will get in this book is the fairy tale, the Cinderella story—the things that bring a smile to your face, tears to your eyes, and fill you with hope for the future." Shapiro's introduction aptly illustrates both the tone of the book and the author's writing style—reverential and clichéd. Although Shapiro acknowledges that Mariah has endured criticism, he refutes it all, preferring to believe that the singer is merely naïve and put upon by the media. He refuses to be critical, casting some doubt on the truth of the biography—the reader definitely is not hearing the whole story. Shapiro has not interviewed Carey herself or anyone else who could give the reader any insight. The author has used mostly television interviews and magazine and newspaper articles as his sources—all stuff readers and fans have seen and heard before. Nevertheless this book provides a good overview of Carey's life and career to date and is easily readable. Her fans definitely will love it. Photos. Biblio. Outstanding biography of one of the most talented musicians on earth!!!

this book shows different prespectives on mariah careys life: in the career prespective we learn about the development of mariah carey as an artist through all of her albums and the outstanding success of a multi-platinum artist through the 90s. in the personal prespective we learn about her childhood, marriage and divorce from Sony music chairman, tommy mottola, her struggle to find independence in her music and of course her latest mental breakdown. this book is a must for every mariah carey fan. this book shows mariah carey from the start through the becoming of the best selling artist of the 90s untill the person and artist she is today. with great photos, a magnificent discography and videography this book is certainly the best biography of the pop-diva MARIAH CAREY.
