Overview

This 1989 episode of Marian's McPartland's syndicated NPR program, Piano Jazz, first released on CD in 1996 by Jazz Alliance, features the pianist–radio host in dialogue with Lionel Hampton, whose career as a vibraphonist-drummer-pianist-bandleader at that moment spanned six decades. As on all her issued encounters with jazz legends -- previous Piano Jazz sessions on Concord featured Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans, Mary Lou Williams, Carmen McRae, and Chick Corea -- McPartland is the perfect partner for musical and verbal conversation. Hampton, 78 at the time of the interview, is in typically effervescent form. He discusses his first encounters with Louis Armstrong, with whom he played vibraphone for the first time, and with Benny Goodman, who in 1936 employed him in his quartet, the first commercially viable interracial jazz band. Turning to the music itself, he plays vibes and piano and sings on "Sweet Georgia Brown"; plays lead piano over supportive McPartland accompaniment on a meditative two-piano version of his original "Midnight Sun" ("I got tired of playing 'How High the Moon,' so I put those chords in the front and put some chords in the back, and got 'Midnight Sun' "); scat-sings on "Mack the Knife"; and generally improvises up a vibraphone storm on good old good ones like "Flying Home," "What's New," and, yes, "How High the Moon."
