Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Marie-Grace Gardner lives in New Orleans in 1853. One night she is studying French when she hears a loud knock at the door. Marie-Grace discovers an African-American baby left at the door. Who abandoned this baby? Will his mother return and claim Philip? Marie-Grace becomes attached to the infant and hopes he will stay with her family. One day a slave catcher comes for the infant and Marie-Grace realizes that Philip is the child of a slave. Marie-Grace and Cecile devise a plan to save the child from slavery by sending the baby to Chicago. In this exciting new series, young readers can experience the life, adventures, and friendships of two dynamic girls, Marie-Grace and Cecile, who live in New Orleans in 1853. Christine Kornacki's illustrations add a touch of realism to this inspiring story. In this unique series, readers experience the events from the joint perspectives of two best friends. This unusual storytelling feature allows readers to step back in time through two identities, gaining a wider understanding of historical events. Part of the "American Girl" series. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

Amust buy A must buy for girls!

Marie Grace finds a baby boy on her doorstep one night when her father is not home yet. She hopes her father lets her keep him and raise him as their own after what happened to her mother and brother. When a slave catcher comes to town looking for a baby boy of color, Marie Grace and her father realize they are all in great danger. Together Marie Grace and her best friend Cecile find a way to save the baby. But just as things go from bad to worse. Rumors of a deadly fever in the town begin to stir. Soon nobody will be safe. I reccomend this book for ages 7 to 12.

    Sooo cute

I find it cute that Marie Grace took in that innocent baby.
I think it's alittle weird that a little girl is opening a door...... without any permission from the housekeeper, maid or even her father. She couldnt wake up them up.....
