Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
When the United States needs information on the enemy in order to prepare for battle, the team they send to get it is the Force Recon Marines. Recon, which stands for reconnaissance, is a very unique and special job in the armed forces. The ability to travel deep behind enemy lines requires intensive training. Force Recon Marines must be male, in the Marine Corps, and able to successfully complete two full years of training. These Marines train to become experts in fighting, parachuting, scuba diving, and escaping from the enemy. Teamwork is an essential skill as well, for these soldiers operate in units of four to six men. They depend on each other to survive. The history, training, and current mission of the Force Recon Marines are told in short chapters and narrative fashion. This informative book includes large, full-color photographs and a controlled text with an average of 75 or fewer words on every two-page spread. Maps, fact boxes, and a "gear page" showing the special equipment used by the Force Recon Marines is included. Part of a broader "Special Ops" series, the book includes a table of contents, a glossary, an index, a bibliography, and a list of online sites for students' research needs. Geared towards a third grade reading level, the engaging text and action photos will no doubt grab the attention of action-loving strong younger readers and struggling older readers alike.
