Overview

She’s his best friend’s sister…

From cradle to grave, Derek and Keith grew up together, enlisted, served, and rose through the ranks together. When Keith died in the field, the last thing he asked was for Derek to keep watch over his sister. But every time Derek is around Kara, he wants to touch her. A promise stands between them and he refuses to seduce his best friend’s baby sister. Determined to get her out of his mind, he signs up for a one-night stand.

He’s the one she wants…

Ever since Kara ran into a shirtless Derek, she’s known he was the one. He promised to bring her brother home and he was there for her at his funeral. But he remains unattainable, no matter their chemistry. Frustrated, she takes a girlfriend’s advice and signs up for a one-night stand.

The last person they expected…

Dressed to kill, Kara doesn’t know whether to scream or cry when Derek turns out to be her date. He’s furious that she’d sign up for a night of sex with a perfect stranger, but together their reunion is combustible and neither can deny the power of their attraction.

He may have been her brother’s best friend, but she wants him to be her Marine with Benefits.

Marine With Benefits is the sixteenth book in the Always a Marine series by Heather Long. While this book is part of a series it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel. I chose this book because the summary piqued my interest.
Kara Childs works at a veteran’s rehabilitation facility. It helps her feel closer to her brother who passes away during his deployment. She also lost his best friend, Derek because he disappeared from his life.
Derek is in love with Kara but feels bad that his best friend died in battle. Derek was asked by Kara’s late brother to watch over his sister and Derek refuses to seduce her. He signs up for a one night stand through Madame Eve.
Madame Eve and matchmaker sets up Kara and Derek. It forces them to face their feelings for each other. The chemistry between Kara and Derek is sizzling hot. The sex scenes were hot.
Overall, I loved this book. While it is only 42 pages long, it packs a lot of story into those pages. I normally am not fond of short stories but this does not read like one or even feel like one. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

In Marine With Benefits, the latest novella in Heather Long’s popular “Always a Marine Series,” Madame Eve’s 1NS (One Night Stand) service pairs Kara and Derek up for one night of no-holds barred passion. Derek is Keith’s (Kara’s deceased older brother) best friend, and off limits. Both have been fighting, what each thought was a one-sided attraction, since they were teenagers. Once they realize they are paired up, they decide to “go for it!” As usual, Ms. Long provides a sexy coupling, reuniting old friends as lovers. Great short story to celebrate the Summer with an extra side of spicy interracial heat!

    a delightful read

Whenever I realize one of Heather Long’s books from the Always A Marine series has been released, I usually jump at the chance to read it.  Can you imagine my jubilation when I learned Book 16, Marine With Benefits, is already available when only a short time ago I had read Book 15?  Long has covered several romance tropes in the series, but this time around the trope of choice is the best friend’s sibling.

Physical therapist Kara Childs takes up the offer to work at a veteran’s rehabilitation facility, which gives her the opportunity to feel closer to her older brother, Keith, who loses his life during his deployment to Iraq.  As far as Kara is concerned, though, she also loses Keith’s best friend, Derek Green, because he’s been absent from her life.  The trouble is she doesn’t really know why.  When readers learn of the reason for Derek’s actions, or lack thereof, they would surely understand why he turns Kara down twice in the past as well as why he decides to keep both physically and emotionally distant from her.

Unbeknownst to one another, Derek and Kara seeks Madame Eve’s exclusive matchmaking service for a one night stand with a gorgeous date to distract them from going after what they really want, each other.  After all, they love each other for years and years but nothing has ever come of it.

Logan Cavanaugh makes a cameo appearance in Marine With Benefits as the voice of reason seeing that he cautions Kara about going on this date.  The irony is not lost on fans of this series, however, because he, his best friend, Zach Evans, and their wife, Jazz Winters, have also benefitted from Madame Eve’s service and were the heroes and heroine in Book 2 and Book 6.  Even Rebecca and Lauren, two other heroines in previous installments (Book 1 and Book 3 respectively) endorse Kara’s decision.  Of course, Derek also gets the stamp of approval from Marines Luke, Damon and Brody, each of whom is also a hero in this series.

When Derek and Kara finally realizes Madame Eve, ever the intuitive matchmaker, sets them up, Kara is first mortified but then tells Derek in no uncertain terms that he’s going to sleep with her that night.  And what a night it is, filled with hot sex, humor and great dialogue!  Long even uses the love-making scene as a means to give readers a glimpse into the struggles some veterans face, thus, making this a sensual yet realistic read.  And what a sweet ending it is for this couple as they finally get their opportunity to live happily ever after!

One of the wonderful things about Long’s series is that each book is a stand-alone and can be read in any random order.  Marine With Benefits is no exception and is another delightful read by this multi-published and talented author.

    IR Military Romance
Derek and Keith were best friends their whole lives.  They did everything together including joining the Marines.  Keith made Derek promise to take care of his little sister Kara if anything should happen to him.  The worst has happened and Keith won’t ever be coming home.  Kara is all grown up and working at Mike’s Place.  She has always had a crush on Derek but he has consistently shot her down.  It is time to move on with her life so she signs up with Madame Eve’s 1NS service to get over Derek so she can do just that.  Little does she know that Derek has done the same thing for pretty much the same reasons and is in fact her date.  It is time to put up or shut up. Will Derek’s promise to Keith keep him from the one woman he has always wanted but couldn’t have?
Another short sexy 1NS addition to the Always A Marine series.  Friends to lovers with a twist.  Ms. Long just keeps them coming.   This is well worth the read.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for fair and honest review.
