Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather N. Kolich
This offering from the "People of the U.S. Armed Forces" uses up-to-date action photographs accompanied by two to three sentences to create a comprehensive picture of life in the U.S. Marine Corps. The simple story begins by explaining why men and women join the Marine Corps, then takes the reader from basic training to life after the service. Along the way, photographs and text show Marines doing many of the jobs offered by the Marine Corps: flying helicopters, preparing for ground battles, landing Assault Amphibian Vehicles (AAVs), and training other Marines. The book also depicts family life in base housing and explains that U.S. Marines live on bases all around the world. Unfamiliar terms such as recruit, civilian, and infantry, which are introduced in the story are defined in a glossary at the end book. End matter also includes a list of books for further reading, instructions for accessing a safe, "educator-approved" website to find more information relating to this topic, and an index.
