Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Published just months before the celebrated Uruguayan writer Benedetti passed away at age 88, this biography fills the gap in the literature on his life and work. Readers learn the details of Benedetti's life, from his early and enduring love for his wife, Luz, to his return to Montevideo after years of exile. Biographer Campanella, a literary critic and director of the Cultural Center of Spain in Montevideo, moves quickly through childhood to the heart of the matter: Benedetti's illustrious writing career. Beginning in his twenties with his involvement with Marcha magazine, Benedetti went on to publish over 80 books of poems, novels, and essays. Campanella references Benedetti's work throughout in footnotes and page-long excerpts, giving a taste of his wide-ranging writing style and making useful connections between autobiographical poems and Benedetti's personal history. She also gives readers enough background to understand the politics of the day, Benedetti's involvement in the leftist revolution, and his subsequent exile. Coverage is lighter from about 2006 on and necessarily doesn't include Benedetti's death. A 14-page photo insert includes shots with Fidel Castro, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, and Eduardo Galeano. Recommended for bookstores and libraries with a Spanish-language poetry section.—Salwa Jabado, New York City
