Overview

In an America driven to near bankruptcy by crushing foreign debt and susceptible to outside forces, the Talos Corporation stands out as a major success story, training soldiers and security forces from around the world and providing logistics and troops for nearly all branches of the United States government.

But Talos has other plans. Three FBI agents, first encountered in Quantico, stand between Talos’s CEO Axel Price and absolute control. When the President is shot and her second-in-command is found at the scene of a horrific crime, Rebecca Rose- on extended sabbatical from the FBI-is thrust back into service to investigate threads that lead deeper and deeper into Price’s organization. Fouad Al-Husam is working undercover in Lion City, Texas, at the core of Talos, where he has uncovered and hidden critical information. Meanwhile agent William Griffin follows a bloody trail of domestic terrorism fro the Midwest into the heart of Talos’s influence.

Enter Nathan trace, victim of a violent incident in the Middle East that led to post-traumatic stress disorder and forced him to enroll in a treatment program, code-named “Mariposa.” The Mariposa subjects begin to experience unexpected side effects that indicate something has gone terribly wrong. Liberated from nearly all human emotions and concerns-and all mental limits-they have become brilliant and lethal sociopaths. They are out of control-the smartest men on the planet, the deadliest.

Yet without Trace’s help, Rose and her fellow agents will be unable to stop the plan that Price has set into motion-a plan that could leave America    shattered and utterly unable to defend itself.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Bear's intriguing near-future thriller, a powerful financier stands ready to seize control of America as the nation teeters on the brink of economic collapse. The Texas-based Talos Corp., helmed by CEO Axel Price, specializes in security technology software and the training of mercenaries. Standing between Price and the downfall of America are a few hardy FBI agents, notably Rebecca Rose, one of the stars of the previous book in the series, Quantico. Besides the nefarious Price, dangers include a supercomputer, Jones Zero, that may or may not be acting on the side of justice, and the fact that Rebecca and others have been used as guinea pigs for a powerful mind- and body-altering drug, Mariposa. Under less capable hands, the extraordinarily complicated plot, numbers of characters and the constant explanations of future technologies might lead to terminal turgidity, but SF veteran Bear keeps everything whizzing right along to the slam-bang conclusion. I gave this book my best, reading over 150 pages, and then gave up. In a year, I might quit twice on a book, but I couldn't go any further with this one. Keep looking for something better.

The United States stands on the brink of a financial collapse much worse than the Great Depression or the Bush Recession. Axel Price, CEO of Talos Corp, sees an opportunity to take power and plans to seize it. FBI agents including Rebecca Rose are pulled back from leave, Fouad Al-Husam working undercover at the Talos Campus in Texas may have been exposed, and Will Griffin stand in his way, but to Price they are gnats. Rebecca and others have their own issues having been tested to see what the effects of the ultra powerful drug Mariposa are. At the same they deal with the pending Price financial disaster and personal issues, the Feds struggle with Jones Zero supercomputer that seems to have gone rogue and only one of its creators Nathan Trace can stop Price from taking control, but the megalomaniac in turn knows who is the only real threat. The amazing thing about this super thriller is the underlying technology explained throughout is effortlessly interwoven into the fast-paced never decelerating story line. Action-packed throughout with a strong cast, MARIPOSA is a terrific tale as the audience anticipates a High Noon showdown between the CEO, three Feds, and the supercomputer creator. Harriet Klausner
