I bought this book earlier this week, and easily sped through the 400+ pages. The novel centers around Mark Coffin, the recently elected junior senator from California. The 30 year old Senate newcomer makes waves when the brand new us president is elected on Mark's coattails on election night. He and his wife (the daughter of a US Senator) go to Washington with high hopes and idealistic dreams in their heads. Mark is soon caught up in what he sees as two great fights. One is over the president's nominee for attorney general. The other is over his father-in-law's defense appropriation bill. Along the way, he becomes the de facto leader of the Senate's 'Young Turks' (a group of equally young, idealistic freshmen senators). The challenges he faces, however, are not just political. He faces a female reporter determined draw him into a love affair, and disloyalty among his own staff. Like I said, this is a book that can't be put down. It's on par with Allen Drury's Pulitzer Winning novel Advise And Conesnt.
