Overview

Book One of the Markan Empire Trilogy.

Two rival claimants to the empty Markan throne meet in battle. When Marcus Vintner defeats his cousin Branad Vintner, it seems the matter is settled. But when General Kelanus is accused of murder, Marcus is implicated and all claims to the throne are suspended.

Zenepha, an intelligent and literate sylph, is plunged into the depths of Markan politics when he is thrust unwillingly onto the throne.

A third claimant, Hingast, is traveling to Marka, determined to press his claim and prepared to use force to get his way.

Marcus and Kelanus must prove their innocence before it is too late and the throne again falls into abeyance or, worse, to Hingast.

Meet the Author

Nicholas A. Rose is the author of the Ilvenworld novels. He enjoys everything to do with the sea, the outdoors and the mountains, which he finds inspirational. Nicholas also enjoys the rather more sedentary pastimes of chess, reading, real ale and, of course, writing.

There are two complete series: the "Gifted" novellas, which are a FREE introduction to my writing, and the "Markan Empire" trilogy. The first of a new trilogy, the "Flying Cloud Trilogy" was released at the end of February 2014 and work continues apace on the next two.

478 nook pages. Suprising good book. Kept me reading right to the end, just to see what would happen next. I like this authors writing, as at no point did this just drone on, to fill space. Cant wait to read more of his work

Probably the best free book you could read. Action lacks description slightly, but the rest is spot on. Great (if somewhat predictable) character developement, interesting plots, and good enough to keep you interested from beginning to end. Some slight grammar errors but that is to be expected from a free book. But not near enough to detract from the read, so overall, I highly recommend it.

Remember, Rose is English, and local customs os word use are valid. The words "was sat" look strange to me also, but I take it as a common usage where the author resides. I find it quaint.

I am amazed that I have not stumbled across Mister Rose's works before this. His Ilvenworld is a well thought out example of "fantasy science fiction" in which a world that appears to be fantasy actual has science fiction underpinnings. (Another example of this genre would be the "Dragon" works by Anne McCaffrey). The characters are well-drawn and memorable and the writing draws you in completely. I heartily recommend anything written by this author.
