Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Stating that ``markets are wonderful places to understand the world,'' noted cookbook writer and actress Jaffrey leads readers on a fascinating whistle-stop tour of markets in Hong Kong, Egypt, Senegal, India, Italy and Mexico. From snake soup to minty tea, fish stew to spices, long salamis to tortillas, she describes local cuisines in bright detail and throws in country customs too: noodles denote long life and are served whole in Hong Kong; at the camel market in Egypt an animal's teeth give away its age; Senegalese folk remedies for a broken heart include ground antelope horns and monkey's paws. Animated prose suggests the bustle of the market square, its sights, sounds and smells; the brief text whets the appetite for more knowledge of each country. Foreign words are smoothly translated within the text, while the meaning of less familiar terms (e.g., ``turmeric'' ``trattoria'') becomes clear from the context. Shohet's bold artwork captures the exotic ambience and high energy of each market by means of a strong palette and aggressive perspectives. An appendix containing six simply prepared recipes is a welcome touch. Ages 5-9. (Apr.)
Children's Literature - Carol Flowers
This book is confusing. The vocabulary is on too many levels. It also contains over-generalisations: "People in India will do anything to stay cool." The characterizations are insensitive: "The women, wearing brightly painted robes called boubous and elaborate head wraps, look like creatures from an exotic heaven." There are also grammatical mistakes: "Everyone has their own bowl and eats with chopsticks."
School Library Journal
K-Gr 4-As open-air markets become more popular in the U.S., this treatment of street markets in other countries provides an interesting contrast to stateside versions. Big, bright paintings featuring simplified shapes heavily outlined in black bring to life market day in Hong Kong, India, Italy, Senegal, Egypt, and Mexico. The text is zippy and engaging, and the discussions of what is offered, especially the unusual food items, are sure to trigger comments from young listeners. Jaffrey includes one recipe from each country, though without mention of the need for adult help, which is certainly necessary. A gentle introduction to what matters in other cultures and to the common links between us all, this unusual book is a welcome addition.-Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA
