Overview

High school senior Kate Winthrop is about to find out just how much she's worth.

After stumbling across the Millbank Social Stock Market, Kate is horrified to discover that out of the 140 girls in her class, she's ranked a bleak 71. Sure, she's not drop-dead gorgeous, and her "fashion" choices leave a bit to be desired...but 71?! Determined not to accept her fate as a "junk bond," she and her best friends quickly set out to make her the fastest rising stock on the Market.

Armed with a sexy new haircut and killer wardrobe, Kate puts her plan into effect — and the analysts take note. In a matter of weeks, her stock value soars, and "Blue Chip" status is within reach. But what begins as a fun social experiment quickly turns into an obsession, one that threatens to ruin her reputation, friendships, and a chance at first love. Will Kate survive the highs and lows of the Market, or will her security crash and burn?

Editorial Reviews

Julie Just
There are better satires of youth's obsession with cool…but this account of Kate's rise, fall and rise makes for an entertaining and occasionally surprising high school tale.
—The New York Times
VOYA
AGERANGE: Ages 12 to 18.

The number seventy-one does not mean much to brainiac Kate until "Michael Milken" IMs her the URL and password to the Millbank Social Stock Market. Logging on to the site, Kate learns that someone has ranked the 140 girls in her class at Millbank High School in order of social standing. Her number? The dreaded seventy-one. Kate refuses to be a social nobody, so she enlists the help of her two best friends to raise her stock to blue-chip status. With a month to go before graduation Kate is on her way to becoming a late-blooming popular girl, but in her quest for Strong Buy status she endangers the values of her friendships and potential boyfriend. The concept of assigning monetary values to popularity is a strong plot device but the execution falls short of its promise. Kate's book-smarts far overshadow what little wisdom she has regarding other people. In the end, Kate's neglected friends are the ones who reveal the true intentions of Kate's popular new boyfriend. Kate's inability to see anyone in the popular crowd for who he or she really is becomes frustrating because at the same time she is elevating her stock values, her mother is vying for membership in an exclusive Essex County, New Jersey, country club and Kate can clearly see her mother's damaging concern with outward appearances. Despite the book's predictability, readers will want to see the ultimately likeable Kate triumph over the popularity market. Reviewer: Carlisle Kraft Webber
April 2008 (Vol. 31, No. 1)

School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up- During the last six weeks of her senior year, Kate Winthrop finds out she is number 71. She doesn't know what that means until she receives a mysterious instant message that sends her to a Web site, where she finds that it is her ranking (out of 140) in the Millbank Social Stock Market, an underground market allowing insiders to buy and sell investments in Millbank High's female seniors. After freaking out, she tells her friends about the scheme and decides to revamp herself. The girls plan to buy into the market for $500 and then win the $25,000 year-end pool by raising Kate's status from junk bond to blue chip. During her transformation, she almost loses her friends, becomes entangled in a love triangle, and learns that being popular isn't all it's cracked up to be. While Kate has the same thoughts that haunt other teens (and engages in the same underage drinking like many of them) this isn't just another makeover novel. After her revamping, Kate decides that she doesn't want to be in the popular crowd after all. Teens who like Sixteen Candles and Can't Buy Me Love (which Kate watches) will dig this book.-Shannon Seglin, Patrick Henry Library, Vienna, VA

Kirkus Reviews
Kate Winthrop, a senior at Millbank High School in New Jersey, accepts her role as a smart but geeky girl with a good heart-but c'mon, a ranking of 71 out of 140 girls in the Millbank Social Stock Market game? Miffed by her below-average status, she transforms herself from toad-ette to princess with help from best buds Dev and Carrie. J.M. Steele, a pseudonym for a pair of New York City entertainment professionals, has created a girl-meets-boy story with a twist. Kate, who reinvents herself as Kat, finds that short skirts and dyed blonde hair launch her skyrocketing market rise. She crosses hottie Will B.'s radar, but could introvert guitar player Jack Clayton be her true match? Addicted to playing the game, Kat is determined to stake her claim to the number-one spot but doesn't realize that she now values flash over friendship. By becoming a shallow "it" girl, Kat risks becoming a player who is played. A lingering wrap-up is the only lag in this otherwise fun and chatty read. (Fiction. YA)

    Great book, must read!

I'm surprised by how much I ended up liking this book. At first, when I began to read it it reminded me of Meg Cabot's own book How To Be Popular, which is another good book I liked. I thought it was okay, so my hopes for this book were not all that high.Yet as the story continued I found myself very much involved in the book and falling into Kate's(aka Kat) world. We know high school to be hard but to place each girl in a marketing system and tamper with their emotions is really one of the best ways to show how high school can be very difficult for a teenage girl, even one who is a senior and only has a few weeks until graduation. At the end,I was pretty much happy with how it ended. Although it was a bit like a Disney ending(not exactly but almost there, but it is one of Disney's 'Hyperion Books') it also gave Katie back some power. I thought this book was excellent and those who read it should just remember that people like this are in high school, just because you are not one of them doesn't mean they don't exist, they are there in different shapes, forms, looks, personalities, etc.

    Wonder what your rate is?

I found the book The market, very interesting and an easy read. If you have the type of personality of being a people person or someone who likes reading about drama then you would like this book. We find Kate a morally great person falling to the desperate depths trying to become popular. Millbank isnt like any another high school at this school you are rated online and by looks. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and it kept my attention from the beginning and I would highly recommend it.

    Wall Street meets High School

This book started kinda slow at first to me, but by the end, had me in tears. The main character Kate is your typical wallflower. She isn't a social outcast, but she isn't part of the ruling class either. Kate finds out about a secret ranking of all the Senior girls called the Millbank Social Stock Market where she is ranked in the "junk bond" ranking of 71, she embarks on a transformation with the help of her good friends to raise her status in the 4 weeks left in the school year. The premise is one that has been in books before: attractive but not hot girl wants to make people see her, so she changes everything and risks it all to be popular. In The Market, we see what it does to Kate, how it alienates her from her true friends, and even the boy who secretly loves her. In the end, it threatens to destroy everything, but Kate's mistake is something that we can learn from. Being true to yourself is the main point. Changing just to fit some artificial standard is not going to bring happiness. The only way that can happen is if you change for your own reasons, and more importantly, it is your decision to make that change.

    Total Greatness

I found this book while I was perusing my local Barnes and Noble. It was sitting on the New Releases table, and the tag line caught my eye. What are you ranked? Well, I didn't know, but felt a need to find out. I went home and sunk into the book. From the first few pages I was completely hooked. I met Kate Winthrop, our leading lady who comes complete with not one, but two side kicks. I met two cute boys, Jack and Will B., who come complete with a high school band. So far, we were right on track for an enjoyable weekend read. Then it happened. J.M. Steele did something new. He introduced a social market that everyone is, literally, buying into. He took an old truth, that high schoolers want to be liked, and he made it fresh and exciting. It caught me completely off guard and it was way awesome. I loved every minute of this book and enjoyed being a part of the adventure with Kate and her friends. J.M. Steele wove together a new high school world. I wanted to be a part of it and at the same time was so thankful that this wasn't actually my high school experience I was reading about. So I had a great time reading this book, and I know you will too. I highly, highly recommend this one.

    Alright theme, weak execution

There's no denying the fact that the 'girl becomes obsessed with rising popularity' is an overused plot. However, this book caught my attention--I mean, 'The Market'? Girls as stocks? That's interesting. And, it was differnt than other books like it, in the way that it explored the concept of popularity instead of just the way that it can change you. However, the thoughts aren't organized well, the characters are far from well developed, the motivations of th characters are hard to understand, and overall, most of it is just a mess. Considering the authors make it so Kate's sister is the one she's trying to live up to, Kate's mom is the one she's trying to impress, why don't the sister and mom play a more important role in the story? There are a couple of sentences about the sister, and a bit of shallow conversation with the mom. Also, the story and the theme rely solely on Kate's narraration, Kate's thoughts, how she sees things, but none of this is strong enough to convey what is meant to be conveyed. The story is a weak example of the overall theme, and, honestly, it would have been more beneficial to have a different narrarator (perhaps Kate's friend Dev, or Will?). Overall, it's a fun read but I'd only recommend it to younger teens, because I don't see older teens or more experienced readers being very impressed with it.

    Surprisingly Refreshing

I had read the first novel 'The Taker' and loved that. This novel was about popularity and what it means to lose yourself trying to win the popular people over. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an enjoyable quick read that teaches you to be happy with who you are.
