The Market

Great book, must read!

I'm surprised by how much I ended up liking this book. At first, when I began to read it it reminded me of Meg Cabot's own book How To Be Popular, which is another good book I liked. I thought it was okay, so my hopes for this book were not all that high.Yet as the story continued I found myself very much involved in the book and falling into Kate's(aka Kat) world. We know high school to be hard but to place each girl in a marketing system and tamper with their emotions is really one of the best ways to show how high school can be very difficult for a teenage girl, even one who is a senior and only has a few weeks until graduation. At the end,I was pretty much happy with how it ended. Although it was a bit like a Disney ending(not exactly but almost there, but it is one of Disney's 'Hyperion Books') it also gave Katie back some power. I thought this book was excellent and those who read it should just remember that people like this are in high school, just because you are not one of them doesn't mean they don't exist, they are there in different shapes, forms, looks, personalities, etc.

Wonder what your rate is?

I found the book The market, very interesting and an easy read. If you have the type of personality of being a people person or someone who likes reading about drama then you would like this book. We find Kate a morally great person falling to the desperate depths trying to become popular. Millbank isnt like any another high school at this school you are rated online and by looks. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and it kept my attention from the beginning and I would highly recommend it.

Wall Street meets High School

This book started kinda slow at first to me, but by the end, had me in tears. The main character Kate is your typical wallflower. She isn't a social outcast, but she isn't part of the ruling class either. Kate finds out about a secret ranking of all the Senior girls called the Millbank Social Stock Market where she is ranked in the "junk bond" ranking of 71, she embarks on a transformation with the help of her good friends to raise her status in the 4 weeks left in the school year. The premise is one that has been in books before: attractive but not hot girl wants to make people see her, so she changes everything and risks it all to be popular. In The Market, we see what it does to Kate, how it alienates her from her true friends, and even the boy who secretly loves her. In the end, it threatens to destroy everything, but Kate's mistake is something that we can learn from. Being true to yourself is the main point. Changing just to fit some artificial standard is not going to bring happiness. The only way that can happen is if you change for your own reasons, and more importantly, it is your decision to make that change.

Amazing Book!

I recommend this book for teens, especially around this tme of year (senior year) as well as any adult who reads these types of books for a fun and easy read. It is very cute and ends well.

The Market is a very good book! I really enjoyed this book and i would recommend it to any young adults! It's so interesting and i could really relate to it. So read this book, you won't regret it!

Total Greatness

I found this book while I was perusing my local Barnes and Noble. It was sitting on the New Releases table, and the tag line caught my eye. What are you ranked? Well, I didn't know, but felt a need to find out. I went home and sunk into the book. From the first few pages I was completely hooked. I met Kate Winthrop, our leading lady who comes complete with not one, but two side kicks. I met two cute boys, Jack and Will B., who come complete with a high school band. So far, we were right on track for an enjoyable weekend read. Then it happened. J.M. Steele did something new. He introduced a social market that everyone is, literally, buying into. He took an old truth, that high schoolers want to be liked, and he made it fresh and exciting. It caught me completely off guard and it was way awesome. I loved every minute of this book and enjoyed being a part of the adventure with Kate and her friends. J.M. Steele wove together a new high school world. I wanted to be a part of it and at the same time was so thankful that this wasn't actually my high school experience I was reading about. So I had a great time reading this book, and I know you will too. I highly, highly recommend this one.

Fabtastic!

Once you start reading this book you cant stop. There is never a sentance that lets you down. It is so well written that it surprises you that your reading about social life. Each role is so well discribed. I give this book a double thumbs up...

Alright theme, weak execution

There's no denying the fact that the 'girl becomes obsessed with rising popularity' is an overused plot. However, this book caught my attention--I mean, 'The Market'? Girls as stocks? That's interesting. And, it was differnt than other books like it, in the way that it explored the concept of popularity instead of just the way that it can change you. However, the thoughts aren't organized well, the characters are far from well developed, the motivations of th characters are hard to understand, and overall, most of it is just a mess. Considering the authors make it so Kate's sister is the one she's trying to live up to, Kate's mom is the one she's trying to impress, why don't the sister and mom play a more important role in the story? There are a couple of sentences about the sister, and a bit of shallow conversation with the mom. Also, the story and the theme rely solely on Kate's narraration, Kate's thoughts, how she sees things, but none of this is strong enough to convey what is meant to be conveyed. The story is a weak example of the overall theme, and, honestly, it would have been more beneficial to have a different narrarator (perhaps Kate's friend Dev, or Will?). Overall, it's a fun read but I'd only recommend it to younger teens, because I don't see older teens or more experienced readers being very impressed with it.

amazing

this book is really a good one. i just couldnt put it down! the things you can really relate to cause that just how high school is. this is probably my favorite book ive ever read i encourage whoever reads this to rush to the store and buy a copy for yourself.

Surprisingly Refreshing

I had read the first novel 'The Taker' and loved that. This novel was about popularity and what it means to lose yourself trying to win the popular people over. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an enjoyable quick read that teaches you to be happy with who you are.
