Overview

Seventeen-year-old tagger Saira Elian can handle anything... a mother who mysteriously disappears, a stranger who stalks her around London, and even the noble English Grandmother who kicked Saira and her mother out of the family. But when an old graffiti tag in a tube station transports Saira to the 19th Century and she comes face-to-face with Jack the Ripper, she realizes she needs help after all.

Saira meets Archer, a charming student who helps her blend in as much as a tall, modern American teen can in Victorian England. He reveals the existence of the Immortals: Time, Nature, Fate, War and Death, and explains to Saira that it is possible to move between centuries – if you are a Descendant of Time.
Saira finds unexpected friendships at a boarding school for Immortal Descendants and a complicated love with a young man from the past. But time is running out for her mother, and Saira must embrace her new identity as she hides from Archer a devastating secret about his future that may cost him his life.

About a month ago I was asked to read and review this book, for an up and coming author.  I was excited from the moment I read the synopsis.  It sounded like my kind of book.  She didn’t disappoint in the slightest.

Though this book is technically a young adult novel, April White writes in a way that could be enjoyed by all ages.  It was fast paced, funny, and exciting.  I became hooked on the book from the moment I began the first chapter. Though this book is fast paced, I must say this is not a quick read.  The book has a very complex plot, and takes time to digest all that is going on with the characters, and all the time traveling.  It is well worth the time reading it though.  April White created a beautiful debut novel that is vivid, complex, and has many intriguing characters.

I enjoyed almost all of the characters, but by far Ringo was my favorite.  He has a quirky and witty attitude that just made me love him from the beginning.  Besides Ringo I really enjoyed the main character Saira, she was funny, spunky, and confident heroine.  I was a refreshing change from the melodramatic characters most young adult literature today.

I wonder if this book will be made into a series, or if it will be a stand-alone book.  The book has a good ending, thank goodness no big cliff hangers, but is left open enough that if the author wished she could write another.  I really hope another book comes out.  I really loved reading this one, and have become quite attached to all the characters.

This book is one that I am so glad I read! April White created an amazing novel that drew me in from the very first page. I love the fact that she created a strong, kick ass main character in Saira. As soon as I heard about this book I knew it was the kind that I would enjoy, but April White blew my expectations out of the water. All of the characters are easy to relate to and are beautifully developed. I was completely immersed in the story line throughout the entire novel, and I felt as if I was following right along side Saira on all of her adventures. I have read time travel books before but this one was definitely the most well executed. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great book to read! I cannot wait until the next book in the series comes out!!

Great action, compelling characters, and a fascinating world where time travel is possible and Time, Fate, Nature, War and Death have whole families of Descendants. The main character, Saira has mad parkour skills and just enough snarkiness to keep things fun. I love this book!

    Marking Time by April White

I just met April White today, and she was a pretty cool woman, to be honest. I listened to part of the book, and it was pretty good. Should I get it?

This book is a great adventure! Saira is snarky yet likeable, and you just love her sass. There's adventures on both sides of time in this book. The world of descendants and supernatural families is thrilling and makes me long for it to be real.  It makes me dream of being "a descendant of time" and being able to time travel! Not to mention the heart throbs in this book;) I can't wait for the next book!

YA, 400 pages, time travel, paranormal

This free, young adult book has 400 pages, is part of a series and while it has a rather insipid conclusion, it could also be considered a cliff hanger as it is continued into the next book. Book two costs $3.99. The editing is pretty good. This is a sexless, profanity free book. It can be very violent at times. There is quite a menagery of shape shifters, vampires, half breeds and other critters. There is a lot of time travel. Sometimes, I was unsure what era the characters were in and as some had the same name, but were namesakes in different parts of history, I became confused. There is some romance, death, saddness, mystery and a good bit of gore and all that goes with it. For ages 14 and up. I think young men, who enjoyed Harry Potter and the Hunger Games would enjoy this series.

Enjoyed the book and its characters. Would have given higher rating, but got a bit confused a couple times as to which time period story was being told from and had to re-read back a few pages to orientate myself to move on.

First in the series, I've got to say, this author knows her business! She was a little slow to grab me, but she did. I fell in love with the main character pretty quickly, after discovering that I was being led by the author's own voice.

The plot of the book is very interesting, and at first seems pretty simple, but don't let that fool you...The story becomes quite convoluted over time, thanks to an evil, power-hungry man, who just won’t go away, and the main character’s own soulful heart.

Remember, this is a series! Good thing, too. Because, there’s just SO much to tell!

April White is an author that has been hidden from me, and I'm awfully glad I found her. You’ll be glad you found her, too.

    Marking Time -the best

I don't usually write reviews but this book kept me 'spellbound' throughout. Reading books about time travel have not been my preference. I must admit, even at my age, I am now hooked. Thank you April for opening a new genre for me.

    Marking Time

This was an excellent read. I loved the characters. The relationships were so warm and realistic I felt like I was living the story at times. The plot was fresh and interesting and even with the time travel involved, the thread of the story never lagged or lost focus. I have already recommended this book to several of my friends and family!

    New take on paranormal

Irandomly encountered this book but I'm glad I did. Some paranormal plotlines are getting a bit stale but this was a great new direction. The plot was complex, the characters believable. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next books.

One of the best books I've ever read in a long time. Just the right amount of young romance, adventure, intrigue and mystery. I fell in love with our heroine, Saira Elian, instantly. I usually like stories that have main strong female characters and Saira did not disappoint with her "snarky" sense of humor and witty comebacks. The author did an awesome job in surrounding our heroine with other great characters that really do help bring the story together.
But while the storyline captivated me, I did find that there were some parts that were lagging. I did feel that during this time, the author sort of stretched a part on a bit too long for my taste and I felt as if I were trudging along (not really retaining anything of the story as I felt it was monotonous).
I assure you though, after you get through that specific part, the story does move along nicely and it did capture my attention again.

Very clean book with a great coming-of-age perspective filled with young love. Great for ages 15+

I highly recommend this book. Happy Reading!

This book is like putting Harry Potter and Percy Jackson together. The writing is like Harry Potter, easy to read, lots of action and adventure. This is my first book by April White, but it wont be my last.

    Highly Recommend

I usually don't leave reviews, but I love, love, love this book. I believe this book is marketed for youth, but I'm 44 years old and I hated to put the book down! I've already purchased the next book. I got this one as a free book from an e-mail (from BookBub). I adore the characters, the fast pace, the smiles it brought to my lips and the tears to my eyes. Kudos, April White! I checked out your website and I believe you'd be an awesome person to get to know. Keep writing and God bless.
