Overview

Marks’ Basic Medical Biochemistry takes a patient-oriented approach that links biochemistry  to physiology and pathophysiology, allowing students to apply fundamental concepts to the practice of medicine—from diagnosing patients to recommending effective treatments. Intuitively organized chapters center on hypothetical patient vignettes and helpful icons allow for smooth navigation, making complex concepts easier to grasp!

Access additional resources online with purchase of text! Instructors receive access to a dedicated Image Bank as well as all student features, which include fully searchable eBook; animations depicting 9 key biochemical concepts; interactive question bank with more than 450 USMLE questions and complete rationales; full patient summaries for each patient discussed in the text; comprehensive list of disorders covered in the text, with relevant web links; and suggested readings for further exploration.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Harris S Goodman, MD (Saint Francis Memorial Hospital)
Description: Geared specifically for medical students, this basic biochemistry textbook emphasizes how biochemistry relates to the practice of medicine.
Purpose: An understanding of basic biochemistry is necessary to the practice of medicine. This book not only explains basic biochemical reactions in an organized manner, but emphasizes how understanding those reactions helps explain specific disease states.
Audience: Written for medical students by professors of biochemistry and internal medicine, this book uniquely ties basic biochemistry, for some an onerous and esoteric subject, to real-life common medical scenarios.
Features: After addressing the basic chemical and biological foundations of biochemistry, the book discusses gene expression, protein synthesis, fuel oxidation, and carbohydrate, lipid, nitrogen, and tissue metabolisms. Basic biochemical reactions are discussed alongside clear, concise diagrams. Relationships to specific disease processes are highlighted by sidebar clinical notes and interesting clinical scenarios involving classic patient presentations. Questions and answers are provided throughout, and reviews appear at the end of each chapter. Additional questions are available online.
Assessment: This book emphasizes how understanding basic biochemistry is necessary to the practice of medicine with the use of interesting yet classic patients. It thus is of great help to medical students who struggle with embracing a topic that at first may seem distant to the practical aspects of medicine.
