Description: The basics of biochemistry are covered in this book, with incorporation of case reports in each chapter that provide examples of the clinical relevance of the material. As an update of the 2007 edition, the clinical and basic science content has been revised where appropriate. Additional updates have been made to the chapter on recombinant DNA technology, and a new chapter has been added on the molecular biology of cancer.
Purpose: The main objective is to present the core principles of biochemistry such as energy regulation, macromolecule structure/function, and gene expression, while demonstrating how this information relates to human disease and treatment. It thus provides an additional strong perspective for those interested in the clinical aspects of biochemistry compared to what a standard biochemistry textbook provides.
Audience: This can be used by anyone who would like to review the fundamental aspects of biochemistry, but it is particularly targeted at medical students or clinical professionals of any level. Both authors have significant experience in training those in the medical profession. The lead author (Dr. Lieberman) has more than 30 years of experience teaching medical students, which guides the content and teaching approaches in the book. Collectively, the authors combine the basic science with clinical examples of its application.
Features: The seven sections cover the core principles of biochemistry, using clear and well-drawn figures and tables. The book has many of the standard textbook features such as notes and clarifications in the margins along with review questions at the end of each chapter and a glossary. As a medical biochemistry book, the main feature is the incorporation of clinical scenarios that progress with the content. The book achieves this by setting the stage of each chapter with patient assessments for which the cause of disease and treatment approaches are explained as the chapter continues while the relevant biochemistry is introduced. As the chapter unfolds, clinical notes and discussion connect the biochemistry to patients, culminating with treatment plans and outcomes. A few of the early chapters could use more internal referencing to where the concepts or topics are covered in greater detail in later sections of the book.
Assessment: This book does an excellent job of blending clinical vignettes with basic biochemistry concepts. Although more comprehensive biochemistry textbooks are available, this one provides very nice detail for the core topics it covers with good organization. Thus, the table of contents and overall focus should be noted when comparing this book to other similar books. The book, combined with the considerable amount of online features, will prepare users very well for medical biochemistry, specifically through the use of integrated clinical examples.
