Children's Literature - Patrice Russo Belotte
If you've ever read about the adventures of Clementine in "The Clementine Series" or turned the pages of All the World again and again to look at the pictures, then you are familiar with the work of Marla Frazee. Part of "The Children's Illustrators" series, this book captures the life and work of Frazee. Written in simple language for young readers, each page is filled with information about what inspires Frazee and how she creates her unique illustrations. Growing up in California, Frazee was surprisingly shy amongst a boisterous family that loved to gather around big, family dinners. Her demeanor carried over to school, and when other kids were excited about sleepovers and theme parks, Frazee was reading books or drawing pictures. She was enthralled with a few titles and determined to create illustrations like those she adored. In third grade, she won an award at a state fair for a book she illustrated for a friend. The excitement stuck with her all the way to college, her first job, and then work as a freelance artist. Divided into short sections, with lots of personal pictures of Frazee and her illustrations, this series is a great introduction to nonfiction reading. The life and passion of each illustrator is made complete with anecdotes, fun facts, and tips on the illustrating process. Each book is complete with a glossary of new terms for young readers and websites for further information. Reviewer: Patrice Russo Belotte
