Marlo Thomas and Friends: Thanks & Giving All Year Long

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Amy Barkat
A well-known actress and feminist icon, Marlo Thomas ushered in a new era of children's music with her 1972 project Free to Be...You and Me, a star-studded TV special, book, and album that challenged stereotypes and encouraged kids to be themselves. Thirty years later, That Girl returns with a book and CD collection of stories, songs, and poems about love, appreciation, and growing up. Thanks and Giving All Year Long again welcomes to the party a diverse cast of big-name performers, including Faith Hill, Jimmy Buffet, and Jennifer Aniston. Sheryl Crow opens the disc with a soothing tone on the rootsy rocker "All Kinds of People," reminding us that "it takes all kinds of ...

Sheryl Crow opens the disc with a soothing tone on the rootsy rocker "All Kinds of People," reminding us that "it takes all kinds of people to make the world just right." From there, the sounds vary from Hilary Duff's meditative pop song about perseverance, "(I'll Give) Anything but Up!" to Uncle Kracker's gravelly rocker about sharing, "I Want It." Leading off a segment devoted to charming prose, David Hyde Pierce (of Frasier fame) tells of "The Mouse, the Bird, and the Sausage" in a performance so grand that moonlighting as a storyteller shouldn't be far off. Robin Williams sports a southern accent and begs us to look at dinner from the turkey's "Point of View," while Sarah Jessica Parker introduces Delilah in a confidence-boosting tale about "The Nothingest Girl in the World." The most remarkable aspect of this collection, and the companion book, is that all the stories and songs are genuine, amusing, and inspiring -- there's not a dud among 'em. And with all royalties benefiting St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, there's plenty to be thankful for on this thoughtful and charming release.
All Music Guide - Johnny Loftus
Thanks & Giving All Year Long is a companion CD to Marlo Thomas' book of the same name. Combining spoken word performances of the stories and poems in the book with original songs and delightful artwork, the collection revisits the sense of boundless positivity -- and life's possibilities -- that made Thomas' landmark 1972 children's release Free to Be...You and Me so special. Thanks & Giving's list of contributors is pretty varied. Musically there's tranquil material from Sheryl Crow and Jimmy Buffet encouraging folks to appreciate diversity and be in a good mood, and Wayne Brady gives love out to the "Unsung Heroes" in life -- you know, the galoshes, zippers, paper sacks, bottle caps, cups, and handles that make the world go round. Hilary Duff's "I'll Give Anything but Up!" is a sweetly urgent pop number comparable in both sound and message to her own work, while the rootsy John Hiatt and Amy Grant duet "Thank Someone" originally appeared on Thomas' 1988 album Free to Be a Family. Interspersed with these warm-hearted musical tracks are equally pleasant stories and poems, read by such Hollywood heavyweights as Antonio Banderas, Billy Crystal, Jennifer Aniston, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Highlights include David Hyde Pierce's reading of "The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage" where he perfectly personifies the title characters in particular the mouse and sausage, as well as "A Tale of Two Friends," which features Muppets Bert & Ernie learning a Christmas lesson from Thomas herself. [In the spirit of the season, royalties from Thanks & Giving's benefited the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.]
