Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
This easy reader is based on several incidents that occurred near the beginning of original classic novel (Little Women). The four brief chapters, which are enlivened by colored drawings on every page, describe in a simple way how the four March sisters first dread the prospect of a rather bleak, presentless Christmas, but then learn the joy of giving, first to a poor family and then to Marmee. A Step 3 Book, from the "Step into Reading" series
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-3--In this adaptation of the opening chapters of Little Women, the four March sisters are disappointed that they are too poor to have their usual Christmas celebration. During the course of the story, they discover that giving is more gratifying than receiving as they focus on getting gifts for their mother and sharing their Christmas breakfast with a poor neighbor. Cheerful watercolor illustrations, done in predominantly pastel shades, and large print make the book accessible to readers about to make the transition into chapter books. However, it is doubtful whether modern readers will relate to the story's didactic message and preachy tone, and there is nothing here that will lead readers to the classic title.--Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY
