Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
During the American Revolution there were moments when it seemed quite improbable that the Colonial cause would prevail. At a time when British military might featured the most highly trained army and the world's supreme navy, how could a seemingly ragtag rebel force win? In the end the mighty British Army and Navy were defeated by a combination of factors. One of those factors was the intervention of the French on the Colonial side. Part of the French intervention took the form of professional officers who volunteered and then were assigned to serve in the war against the British. No more memorable example of this type of international support of the Colonial cause can be found than Lafayette. A young officer at the time of his arrival in North America, Lafayette was given the rank of general in the Continental Army and served both bravely and ably thereafter. A personal favorite of General Washington, Lafayette left behind a legacy of service to the fledgling United States that remains historic. The story of Lafayette before, during, and after the Revolutionary War is presented in this volume in the illustrated "Understanding the American Revolution" series. Lafayette's biography is well handled by Liza Colozza Cocca in this publication. Cocca does a particularly solid job of writing when she delves into the motivation that was behind Lafayette's joining the Colonial forces, writing the Rights of Man, and then advocating for republican causes despite lethal risks in his homeland. This is a sound illustrated biography that highlights critical events in a noteworthy person's life. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
