Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This well-researched book about the pros and cons of marriage viability in the United States is both thought provoking and informative. It begins with a history of marriage as an economic unit of duty and continues to the present day marriage of romantic love. Other unusual liaisons like polygamy or covenant marriages in our own and other countries are described. What constitutes a family--such as extended or nuclear families, living together, and same sex marriages--is presented from the conservative and liberal points of view. Data concerning the health and the well being of children and their parents in marriage and divorce are reviewed. Differences in ethnic groups are reported. This thoughtful, balanced book raises questions, gives the latest information available, and remains hopeful in outlook. Chapter notes, a reading list, web sites for further information, a bibliography, and an index are included. This book opens the door for thought and discussion about the subject. VOYA - Christina Fairman
These newest series additions address a variety of topics that teens will recognize: affirmative action, racial profiling, media bias, marriage, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Each volume provides historical context for its topic along with contemporary views of how the issue is being addressed in society today. Where appropriate, both sides of an issue are addressed, although more effectively in some books than in others. Marriage is the least balanced of the group. This title is actually two books in one. It is an account of marriage as an anthropological institution as well as a discussion of the growing movement to legalize same-sex marriage in the United States. For the latter topic, the book would be of greater interest to teens if the discussions were more evenly balanced between pro-gay and anti-gay groups. Stronger material supporting the anti-gay marriage front is necessary, including a greater number of interviews with people who oppose the issue and an unbiased presentation of why they hold such deeply felt convictions. Stefoff generally describes the arguments of those who oppose gay marriage, but she immediately negates their arguments in the same paragraph, thus hindering readers from forming their own opinions on the topic. Supporters of gay marriage are also shortchanged, however, as Stefoff misses opportunities to discuss central legal arguments that reinforce their case. Surprisingly readers do not learn about the U.S. Constitution's equal protection clause and the doctrine of separation of church and state, two key arguments for allowing same-sex unions. Finally when writing about marriage as a global institution, the author barely touches on prevailingtrends in European countries away from marriage (heterosexual and homosexual). From a historical and anthropological point of view, it is an odd omission. Marriage is not recommended for purchase based on its incomplete presentation of debates about the issue. For a more balanced discussion of same-sex marriage, teens can refer to the excellent resources available for students at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/extra.
