Overview

Savvy, smart Kyle runs a booming African-American beauty supply business, but his main job is hiding his wife from the sistahs who would skin him alive for marrying a woman like her. Easy-going Allen can please his bossy Mama and his gold-digging fiancée—just not at the same time. Big-hearted Wil's got a wife with a mouth so big she should consider a career in broadcasting. And smooth and sexy Jay's "the man"—not only for his wife, but for all the other lovely ladies he can't resist.

Lifelong friends Kyle, Allen, Wil, and Jay are finding out that marriage means more than acting like the Huxtables. When each one is shown the door by his furious woman, the result is a rowdy romp through sleazy hotels, divorce court, jail, and Viagra—all in the arms of old flames, young things, and cutie pies. As the friends fend off strippers, trippers, psycho ex-football players, and stuff too freaky to mention, they know there's one thing they can always count on...each other.

Sassy, spirited, and smart-tongued, Married Men takes the battle of the sexes to a whole new playing field, where the goal is staying true to your own game and still doing right by the woman you love.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Like Weber's pulpy debut novel Lookin' for Luv, this crudely written romance seems condemned to advertise its author's limitations, offering virtually no meaningful insight into the serious problems his cardboard cutout characters face. "Black people are treated differently than white people," one of them opines, and that's about as shrewd as it gets. Successful businessman Kyle was the first of a group of four New York City bachelors to wed, and he took a white wife. Now in their mid-30s, Kyle's buddies Jay, Wil and Allen rush to his side as he is falsely jailed by racist cops for the attempted murder of an elderly woman. Mama's boy Allen is caught between his shady, mercenary girlfriend, Rose, and his demanding mother. A compulsive womanizer, egocentric Jay flaunts his disrespect by neglecting his wife, Kenya, and their baby daughter. Wil reluctantly covers for him, but his wife, Diane, is a snoop who is constantly stirring up trouble. Kyle suffers from impotence and his shrink says the trauma of his arrest triggered a subconscious fear of being married to a white woman. Even Viagra doesn't help, so Kyle goes off to Africa to find himself. Meanwhile, opportunist Rose bullies Allen into marriage and manipulates both him and his mother into taking out insurance policies with her as beneficiary. Predictably, Ma is murdered during a holdup. Weber fails to evoke any sympathy at all for his cast of stereotypical, shallow characters as they blunder through this soap opera. "I played dumb," one character says, unwittingly speaking for all concerned. They're not playing. Agent, Marie Brown. 10-city author tour. (Sept. 4) Forecast: Despite its lowest-common-denominator approach, the book mayappeal to those who sent Lookin' for Luv into a fourth printing. Weber, recently named African-American Bookseller of the Year, will be a force in driving sales. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    I LOVED this book!!!!!

Carl had my attention from beginning to end. The main characters were so believable ! I found myself gasping and yelling..."I knew it"! a number of times throughout the book. My favorite characters are Wil and Allen! It gives me hope that there are actually guys out there like them! It's a must read!!!

A Good Read and a page turner!

Carl Weber did a great job with this book. It was interesting and fun to read from start to finish. At the end of the book I wanted to read more. The characters were great. If you are looking for a book that will keep you reading this is the one.

A males version of Waiting To Exhale

A fun, fast-paced, exciting ride of the lives of married men. Very entertaining. Crazy plot with crazier twists and turns. A roller-coaster ride of drama. This book will keep you wanting more. Characters that you love or love to hate. It'll have you rooting for your favorite character. Also an interesting and realistic look of married men from a different point of view. Carl Weber's best work.

    A reviewer

This was by far the BEST book I have read this year! I could not believe how much I wanted to slap ALL those men and then hug ALL of them. Even the women deserved a slap too(Rose deserved lethal injection :-)). I am not married yet but this book gave me and idea that everything isnt all roses ALL the time. Also how what can happen when you take people for granted. It was an EXCELLENT story and I am passing it on to ALL my fiends. Thanks

    Good Read

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end... It was not too far fetched and u couldn't help but get emotional with these men cause they had some serious drama going on in this book... My favorite character from the book was Allen... I'm glad things worked out for him in the end, he was a very sweet man...

    One of His Best!

This is my third book from Weber and probably my favorite. This book is really great. It has drama (like all of his books). I love the way that he writes and each character has their own 3rd person chapter. He is becoming my favorite male author. I love the characters and they are not far-fetched. I am partial to all of his books since they center around the town that I grew up in and I can just see the locations of where he is mentioning. GREAT READ! I didn't want it to end.

    Must read

during the time i read this book i was going through a bitter and hard separation after being married for 11yrs. this book gave me a inside look at how men think, feel, live, look at life and their responsibilities. the bottom line to me...no matter how much a man may love his family he will only go without to a certain extent and that extent varies from man to man.

    Best book

This book is one of the most realistic fiction that I have found. It really shows the frustration, the determination, and the ability to love someone and let them go and sometimes to let them back. I recommend this book to everyone I know.

    Oh my Lord

I am a huge fan of Carl Weber so I knew this book was going to be great. I picked it up the first day it came out.. read it within the next two. My roommate in college thought I was crazy. I literally was laughing aloud. Not to mention swearing and screaming at a certain person. I usually get into books, but not like this. Carl Weber is an amazing author. I look forward to his books every year. I would recommend this book to everyone. I have already gotten a few others hooked on his books.

    don't judge a book by it's cover

I was fascinated and addicted from the first chapter. Each character was identifiable and very interesting. This was my first read by Weber and thank goodness there are so many more books by him, that I can sit back and read, read and read!!!! Kudos!!!
