VOYA
If you have any middleschool male reluctant readers or boys who have difficulty reading, you will welcome the new Football Superstar series. This review was written and published to address three books in the sereis about Peyton Manning, Mark Brunell, and Marshall Faulk. Each volume contains numerous pictures, large print, nonthreatening vocabulary, and short chapters with attractive covers and interesting information that will lure students. Readers will enjoy learning about the various backgrounds of each playertheir families, high school careers, their reasons for selecting a particular college, leadership qualities, career highlights, work habits, and problems. Fans learn that Brunell had a difficult time choosing between a football or a baseball career. Faulk had to overcome growing up in a druginfested neighborhood, and Manning had to carry the weight of being the son of a famous quarterback. Although all three books end with the 19981999 NFL season, omitting the most recent season, readers will not be disappointed or come away feeling that they missed something. The emphasis of each volume is on how and why Manning, Brunell, and Faulk became superstars. A possible writing/research project might be to instruct the student to update the book using this past season's statistics. Simply put, each of these three books will score at least a field goal if not a touchdown with its intended audience. Photos. Charts.
