This book is packed with straightforward information about choices ranging from the most basic (how to save on taxes, picking the bank that's best for you) to the most complex. With wisdom and wit, Loeb also shows you how to tap into the data and techniques the pros use: in each chapter he gives the telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and postal addresses of professional associations, regulatory agencies, and other key sources the financial analysts, planners, and brokers use every day to make their decisions.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This virtual encyclopedia of facts and strategies for securing wealth is packed with commonsense advice on topics ranging from investing in securities to buying a home, a car or a computer to stretching vacation dollars abroad. With minute details amplified by charts and graphs, Loeb, an award-winning financial journalist, explains why one must set goals early, saving for children's college and planning for retirement. A 45-year-old married person with a household income of $50,000 wishing to retire at 62 could need $1.3 million. Work benefits could amount to that after 30 years. But it's apt to be up to the individual to put most of that together, and this book tells how. Loeb spells out how much will be needed at every stage of life and how to obtain it. He helps set a budget, hire a financial planner, cut costs and make wills. On the topic of taxes, he tells how not to pay more than you must. (Jan.)
Library Journal
A former editor of Fortune and Money, Loeb presents an inclusive compendium of financial advice. In the tradition of the long-outdated Sylvia Porter's Money Book (1975), Loeb provides good coverage of investment and insurance issues. His advice extends to consumer topics such as how to select a plumber, choose a long-distance carrier, and make economical travel decisions. His treatment is concise, at times almost like brief media spots, and often includes names and telephone numbers for authoritative sources of additional information. Loeb's work is an excellent source for general information but destined to be outdated within a few years.-Joseph Barth, U.S. Military Acad. Lib., West Point, N.Y.
David Rouse
Loeb is well known as the former managing editor of both "Fortune" and "Money" magazine and for his eponymous annual "Money Guide", which first appeared more than 10 years ago. With authority behind this latest entry into the arena of financial planning manuals thus ensured, the encyclopedic "Lifetime" "Financial" "Strategies" is certain to become a standard, both for personal use and for library reference. In addition to thorough coverage of the usual topics, such as savings, stocks, mutual funds, and home buying, Loeb offers chapters on using "computers for fun and profit," "getting the most from your car," and "making your travel dollars go farther." In every chapter, additional sources of more detailed information are identified, with prices, addresses, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses listed.
