Overview

Marchessault provides a close reading of some of the key texts by Canadian scholar of humanities and mass communication McLuhan's (1911-80), in order to discern the contribution his thinking can make to understanding the present condition of the convergent and yet unstable media cultures. She says that he exaggerated the distinctions between linear and nonlinear and other oppositions such as that between orality and literacy, in order to clarify the concepts he was introducing, but we can now see that they are not mutually exclusive. Her account is basically chronological, following his time in Cambridge, America, and global theater. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
