Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sarah Knight
Martha Stewart has become synonymous with the art of home entertaining; her name is part of the American lexicon. Tracing Martha's life from her beginnings as a child in middle class New Jersey to success in the domestic arena to her fall from public grace, this text presents many details. Filling the book with interesting facts, including Martha's early career as stockbroker and her mistake in attire while attending a gala dinner at the White House, Paprocki maintains the reader's interest. Neither shying away from controversy nor letting it be the main topic of the book, Paprocki finds balance as she details how Martha Stewart became a domestic diva. Detractors, who publicly voice their dislike for Stewart in terms of her person and her business decisions, easily could overwhelm Martha Stewart's biography; Paprocki remarkably never lets the discontented voices control the story. Rather, her text captures the polarizing figure that is Martha Stewart, addressing public issues, such as the indictment, trial and jail time for SEC violations. Paprocki tempers this coverage with the details of Martha Stewart's acute business instinct, perfectionism and work ethic. Additionally, she details Martha Stewart's decisions in terms of name branding and loyalty to Kmart. Therefore, this book accurately and interestingly portrays the life of Martha Stewart. If a reader is interested in an unbiased biography, this book is highly recommended. Reviewer: Sarah Knight
