Overview

For nearly 20 years, home crafters have turned to the pages of Martha Stewart Living for all kinds of crafts projects, each presented in the magazine’s inimitable style. Now, the best of those projects, including step-by-step instructions and full-color photographs, have been collected into a single encyclopedia.

Organized by topic from A to Z, Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Crafts contains complete instructions and brief histories for more than 30 techniques, detailed descriptions of the necessary tools and materials, and easy-to-copy templates. Martha and her team of crafts editors guide readers through each subject, from botanical pressing and decoupage to rubber stamping and wreaths, with characteristic clarity and unparalleled attention to detail.

Crafters of all skill and experience levels will appreciate the many variations presented for each technique. For example, candlemaking presents a comprehensive array of poured, rolled, and cutout candles, including instructions for making your own one-of-a-kind rubber candle molds, floating candles, sand candles, and more. Each craft in the book takes on charming new dimensions with innovations that could come only from the team behind Martha Stewart Living.

In addition, each entry in Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Crafts is chock-full of tips and advice. Handy glossaries in the entries–such as a comprehensive gem glossary, a glitter glossary, and a color glossary for making tinted wax–are valuable references that crafters will refer to again and again. What’s more, the Tools and Materials section outlines the best essential supplies that every crafter needs to have on hand, and the Sources pages clue readers in to the vendors and suppliers that the magazine’s crafts editors rely on most.

Filled with solid technical know-how, and presented with gorgeous color photographs, this handy guide can be read page by page and kept as a lasting reference by crafters and artisans alike.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Stewart leaves no craft behind in this extensive compilation covering every craft for the DIY set, from albums and scrapbooks to wreaths. With more than 1,000 photos and 100 line drawings, Stewart provides step-by-step instructions for something as simple as making a shell soap dish to the more complicated marbleizing paper. Fans of Stewart, from kids to adults, will not be disappointed with the range of crafts, from folded-paper projects, photo-printed pillows, quilting and candle making to oldies-but-goodies like tissue paper flowers, rubber stamping and decoupage. Each subject is arranged in alphabetical order, and begins with an overview of the craft and the supplies needed, then continues with variations on the featured craft and tips for success: for example, with the chapter "Nature Crafts," Stewart focuses on acorns, pinecones and shells, then within the chapter shows the reader how to whipstitch, how to make an acorn pin cushion, pinecone flowers, shell-covered pots, etc. With its spring publication, this must-have book will be sure to make its way into the hands of many lucky crafters in time for Mother's Day. From The Critics

Martha Stewart and the editors of Martha Stewart Living have compiled this collection of basic instructions for over two dozen currently popular crafts. Similar to The Michaels Book of Arts & Crafts, this book was designed to take advantage of materials available in large craft stores. Each entry includes a list of supplies, a paragraph of instructions, and photos of the finished project.

    Get your creative juices flowing!

I received this book as a gift. I don't normally make a lot of crafts, but this book has so many great ideas. Most of the projects are fairly easy, so even the most un-crafty person could make wonderful gifts and home decorations. The only problem is, of course, that you have to purchase all the tools and products with which to make the projects. From what I can see, the instructions are pretty good and the color photos are great. Some of the projects are somewhat putzy, but others seem pretty straightforward. I haven't yet make anything -- it's hard to decide because there are so many neat projects. It also makes a very nice end table book.

    Comprehensive & informative

This is a wonderful book, which really lives up to it's title of Encyclopedia. There are many different crafts represented, so it is easy to become interested in some that you may not have tried. The instructions are detailed enought to get you up and running. If you really get into a certain activity, there are always more detailed sources. The photographs are beautiful, as with all of Martha's publications. I am enjoying my copy immensely.

It opened the world to crafts I had no idea how to start.

I really enjoyed the book. I learned how to do some crafts I have never had experiences with and it is pretty detailed and informative. I would recommend this book to anyone that is crafty or wants to become crafty.

Another winning Selection From Matha Stewart

I have to admit to being a real admirer of almost all things Martha Stewart-ish. I am no champion house-keeper nor am I a crafting wizard but I do always enjoy the Martha Stewart Magazine and website. In this age of wonderful craft & sewing books -I think that any book that would dare to call istself a 'crafting encyclopedia' would have to be pretty darn sure of itself and this encyclopedia does not disappoint. As always with Martha Stewart products, the instructions are well written & beautifully illustrated. You can find information and "how-to's" about a wonderful, very wide, variety of crafts. General sewing, specialty sewing, embroidery of all kinds, quilting ,applique, printing, dyeing, and many, many other types of craft projects are included in this very well done book. In addition to the book a CD included that contains many templates and patterns that can be printed out . ALso included is an extensive reference guide for all kinds of great sewing and crafting suppliers, equipment and fun things.

This book is, I believe, an excellent addition for any sewer, crafter or "Martha wannabe". Well done, clear, colorful and highly informative!

    BEST CRAFT BOOK EVER!!!

Martha has out done herself with this collection of crafts. You name it, the book has got it! It has many craft ideas as well as explicit instructions on how each technique is done. All I need to do now is find the time to do all the crafts, because, trust me, you will want to do them all!

    Not your typical craft book!

This is definitely a "big girl" craft book. Not your usual crafts and Martha has many different and unusual ideas.

The Maven of Material Modification does it again!

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book and it was worth the wait. Martha can sometimes veer into the ridiculously expensive - but this one is for crafters of all types and regardless of budget. In many cases, the most expensive thing you will purchase is the book itself! Martha's books ALWAYS have excellent photograpny and easy to follow instructions. There are several crafts in this book that I haven't yet dabbled in - and the examples she has chosen are cute and mainstream enough that I am going to give a few a try. I won't have to invest in any new items in my crafting stash - just repurpose a few - always a plus. I recommend this book as a gift to any budding crafter because it opens up virtually every conceivable craft for them to read before investing. Great for experienced crafters to have on their shelves for inspiration. Thanks, Martha!

    Martha Stewarts Enclyclopedia of Crafts

Martha just has a way of lingering around now, doesn't she?
This book is easy to look at, but as with most crafts books, one wonders how final projects would look under one's own hand. Good ideas can be gleaned from the pages and perhaps even reasonable reproductions could be achieved.
